To start off, I liked everything about this show. The casting was great and the blending of genres was too. However, the storyline focusing mostly on the mom towards the last 3 or so episodes was a bit of a let down. The story starts off with the FL being the cop daughter but then morphs into a story when the 2FL gets pat on the back so much where she becomes the new female lead. This would be fine if the early episode themes weren’t that the daughter felt pressured to constantly be there for her mom, who treated her badly when she was a kid. And her whole career and life has been about taking care of her mom and proving her worth so she wasn’t thrown away, like her mom did once and thought about giving her away too. The apology given from the mom was a non apology so switching to her as FL and giving her a full romance and happy ending while leaving the actual FL’s story open ended and rushed seems like a choice from the writers and producers to soothe their past decisions. I am not saying reconciliation is bad or that a 50 y/o mom can’t have happiness and love but make a story about that instead of forcing more than 60% of the show to be “woe is me” for the mother. Most of the flashbacks did nothing for the FL and only backed up the 2FL. You only need one or two flashbacks to solidify “mom had a hard life” trope more than that is dragging out an idea for more air time.

Although I dislike the writers choice to favor the mom and give her everything she ever wanted and needed in life, it’s a good binge choice for a simple show with a bit of true crime and thriller. And romance! If you count a 50 y/o woman going back to her high school fling , not the daughter though. It’s hinted at and they kiss once or twice but they never solidify their relationship or emotions by the end of the series.

I think mothers who have unresolved guilt over how their daughters were raised and grew up would LOVE this. But if you’re a daughter it feels like a cop out for actual responsibility and accountability for a mom’s past actions.

Again, the mom (2FL) cared more about a random girl and EVEN TOOK A KNIFE TO THE STOMACH BECAUSE OF HER, than her actual daughter. It felt like a very draining relationship that the daughter is stuck in (hence why she doesn’t want to leave her new coworkers and could be boyfriend at the end, when she has to go back to HQ). A lot of her actions is based off of unresolved feelings and trauma but the only one who gets comforted is the mom who caused it all.
