(PS: You're the first person, beside myself, who has Takeru as their avatar!)
Most of the Japanese movies which are heartwarming always involve an animal of some kind (really!) so I didn't pay much attention to it. But I think you can try watching 'Hinokio'. It's somewhat like Pinocchio but in a more futuristic way. I watched it years and years ago so I can't exactly remember everything about the story.
If you're put off by watching slow dramas, then I wouldn't exactly recommend 'Q10' to you. But different people have different ways of viewing it so what might appear slow to me, doesn't apply to someone else.
I've always been a fan of 'Rurouni Kenshin' (aka 'Samurai X') since I was in high school coz I really love the anime. But I've forgotten all about it! :( Period dramas/ movies have always been my favourite genre to watch, besides high school.
I'm currently following 'Kazoku Game' and I thought of finishing up the last season of 'Gokusen' before clearing away my on hold list. How about you?
I hope you won't lose interest in 'Q10'!
'Q10' is a lovely drama, but it can get really, really slow at certain parts, so I wouldn't recommend you to watch all in one sitting. Nonetheless, watch it till the end and you'll discover a whole lot of things and maybe shed a tear or two. It's really sweet, but I'm conflicted because I love this drama and yet dislike it at the same time. I can't figure out why till now. And I've watched this in March.

It's around two and a half hours long and I have to admit, I can't bear to watch it coz of the six kissing scenes. And the bed scene. And the taking off shirt scene.
I should stop now. But enjoy nonetheless. :D
I personally haven't watched 'Tonbi' yet but there are many good reviews for it. Furthermore, the drama was nominated for the '16th Nikkan Sports Annual Drama Grand Prix'. Take-chan is in fourth place for the 'Best Supporting Actor' category while 'Tonbi' gets fifth place in the 'Best Drama Series' category. So both the drama & the actor are in top five.
If you're interested in watching Takeru's shows, I'd highly recommend 'Rurouni Kenshin' of course. But if you've already watched that, try watching 'Q10'. It's very heartfelt & the supporting characters add to the depth of the story. But try not to watch all nine episodes in one sitting as it can get really boring coz I feel that the drama is quite slow. I have mixed feelings about this drama & am really conflicted about it.
