I know what you mean... In most cases they are just a burden thrown on to the character's already heavy load. But, I also think in a lot of cases, that without them the male lead would probably not even realise his feelings for the female lead if it wasn't for the second lead making him constantly jealous. XD

And then there's the exception to the exception: when the second lead dates the lead girl first and for the entire drama you are convinced he must be the main lead and this other guy trying to come between them has to be the second lead.......... And then some form of witchcraft is performed and she chooses the other guy. Leaving the one who was perfect for her all along so forever lead an incomplete life without his true love. Yes, I'm talking to you Barbie Hsu in Summer's Desire. :( break my precious heart again please.

Although I completely agree that KJW should be playing a lead, but perhaps this is not the lead for him. There are no small parts. The script is written before the actors are chosen so... maybe he just fit the character of the second lead better? :)
