I think that's such a beautiful way of looking at it, the dance sequences represents their developing attraction…
I can understand, republican era dramas can be heavy on the propaganda sometimes, but I didn't find Winter Begonia to be so and it's up there with all my favourites. πβοΈ

Forgot to mention, Winter Begonia (ι¬θΎΉδΈζ―ζ΅·ζ£ ηΊ’οΌis another excellent "bromance" drama full of not so subtle courtship between wealthy businessmanCheng Fengtai and Beijing opera lead Shang Xiruiπ. Sadly it didn't make waves in the BL fandom, likely I suspect due to the actors being more mature and the setting being 20th century war era China, but for me it's very reminiscent of Farewell My Concubine which is widely considered one of the most if not the most culturally significant movie in Chinese cinema. I know the Chinese censors can be very cumbersome at times (Winner is King, Immortality, will we ever see them?π) but when we get epic subtle romances like WoH, Winter Begonia and The Untamed I'm somehow grateful to the censors.π΅βπ«

I know, right?! I remember thinking that a lot when I watched WoH for the first time: "How on earth did this get past censorship?!! π³ They're SO obvious!ππ ". I can only surmise someone on that censorship board was a BL fan and helped explain away the gayπ (eternal gratitude to that person if my guess is right!) I'll check out Fangs of Fortune!π«‘ππ

Ahh so this is the screenwriters characteristic style, good to know! ππ To be honest I think style of expression is way closer to real life than super open communication, I don't know anyone who's that communicative in real life, let alone Japanese men as you say!π I also prefer Chinese "η₯ι³/soulmate" bromance BLs because they're so much more subtle about their attraction and they find a million ingenious ways to express it secretly. For example there's a scene in Word of Honor where Axu is taking a cup of wine from Wen Kexing but THE WAY he takes it tells everything, he glides his hand exquisitely along the length of his arm and sleeve, gently feeling the curves of his body, before elegantly wrapping his hand around the cup. I practically imploded!π€―π€£ To me, that's way for powerful than a thousand open declarations of "Bro, you're hot!" Do you remember any moments like that in bromance BLs that really stood out for you?
The dancing in this movie is the romance. Them dancing together represents the stages of romance from the courtship…
I think that's such a beautiful way of looking at it, the dance sequences represents their developing attraction and inner turmoil rather than dialogue. Especially that scene near the end when Suzuku is practicing alone and he sees Sugiki in the mirror with him, like his suddenly became aware that Sugiki completes him. People don't think that was romantic as hell???π Or maybe it's because these characters have such different personalities to the average high-school BL characters, so they're misunderstood by the audience. They're athletes competing at the top of their game, they have to be hard and emotionally uncompromising to stay at the top. Letting emotions creep into their ambitions will be their undoing, I think that's why everything seemed to be creeping along quietly until it exploded into volcanic passion in the train.π₯Ίβ€οΈπ
A fabulous production! The 4 leads worked so hard on the dance choreographies, I'm just in awe of their dedication and talent.ππππ
Some people said the storyline wasn't quite right but let's be fair; this is adapted from a manga with 8 volumes to date and the story is still ongoing. To build the story like the manga would need a series, the same results can't be achieved in a 2 hour movie. Also I imagine a lot of scenes had to be cut to get the time down, possibly we lost some character development this way.
Furthermore remember that this isn't your run of the mill Thai BL where the characters just chase each other from start to end and have literally nothing else to do with their lives. The characters from 10 Dance are incredibly driven and passionate about their craft, so a large part of the movie is understandably dedicated to that. The final sequence with 10 dances and the sweet kisses and the promise to meet each other again on an even bigger platform was just amazing!π₯Ήπ
Overall bravo to Japan for the setting the bar so high for gorgeous visuals and sizzling homoeroticism! Bravo! Bravo!πππππ
I really enjoyed this drama. The actors, directing, scenery and story were all great. I know the city Jinan well (where this is filmed), so watching this was really nostalgic, like going backπ’. I really liked Turtle and Sun Xiao Rui's character development too. Well done to the whole production team, you did a great job!ππππ¬
So many new BLs come and go every year now, but I'll never get over Addicted. I've lost count of how many times I've watched it over the years. All the characters (but let's be honest, Bai Luoyin's dad is simply the bestπ₯°) , the setting, their charming Beijing dialect, their silly school antics, they're all engraved in my heart forever. ππ₯Ήπ
