As someone who is Chinese, I havebeen introduced to quite a few stars in China by my cousins and have a Chinese cousin who's a big fan of a few male stars. This might not be entirely true, but I've noticed that while both the male lead and female will gain tons of popularity from a popular c-drama, the male lead tends to get more fans. Let's take Love O2O, for example. While Yang Yang and Zheng Shuang were both kind of famous at that time, Love O2O helped them gain so many more fans, but Yang Yang had gathered more fans than Zheng Shuang at that time. While actresses like Yang Mi and Angelababy, who are very very famous in China, have 100+ million followers on Weibo, not all of their followers are extremely loyal fans (and some are organizations and companies they collaborated with), so their normal posts only get an average of 100,000-400,000 likes, and more if the post is about something big. But I've seen many male stars post as often as these actresses with way less followers but get millions of likes. And while Yuan Binyan is pretty famous with 10+ million followers on Weibo, she has only gotten 100,000-300,000 likes for her recent posts, and Cheng Yi, who has only 100,000 more followers, has gotten 300,000-700,000 likes for his recents posts. And on Douyin (Chinese version of tiktok), everyone is commenting on how handsome and awesome Cheng Yi is and blah blah blah every time Love And Redemption's official Douyin posts a clip about something. But it is also true that Cheng Yi did a spectacular job as his role of Sifeng, but the reason why some people aren't satisfied with Yuan Binyan's acting may not be entirely because of her ability to express emotions or whatever, but also because the character and personality of Xuanji was kind of frustrating and too naive at times. But, in my opinion, they both acted wonderfully, which is why Love and Redemption has stayed at 7.5 for a long time as near 200,000 people are rating it on Douban, and Go Ahead, another very famous airing drama in China right now, declined rather disturbingly from a high 8.1 to a 7.1, with about the same number of people rating it.
