Yes!!! Well, I have watched a few Xianxia before but this is my first Wuxia. Am I qualified? xDDD
Oooh, yay!
So, I wrote an article on MDL introducing Wuxia dramas, and included Word of Honor as a Wuxia drama recommendation. And of course, someone had to create drama with a very loved drama, WoH. They said that WoH is not suitable for people who are beginning to watch Wuxia, because the story is hard to understand. Do you agree with this?
Oh, no, I'm not offended at all! Could you provide your reasons as to why WoH is not a good Wuxia drama for people…
Unfortunately, this article can't be edited.
Nice point, though. It's interesting to see everyone's POV. I have a friend who has only watched a few Wuxia dramas, but they really enjoyed WoH. Perhaps you don't really understand the concept and plot of WoH, and that happens. Sometimes, you can't really grasp what is happening in the drama. This is an introduction to Wuxia genres, so you obviously won't be able to learn everything about the genre just by reading this article.
" I'm exactly a beginner in xianxia and Wuxia world, but I'm seeing WoH, and I'm a little bit confused if is xianxia or wuxia or all of this two"
You said you have read my "arguments", so I'll just assume you mean my comments. WoH is a definite Wuxia. Quite a few of my comments below have addressed this common question.
Hi! I immediately apologize for my English!!! I've read your articles and some of the comments. I think that could…
Oh, no, I'm not offended at all!
Could you provide your reasons as to why WoH is not a good Wuxia drama for people wanting to explore this genre?
For clarification, I did not talk about any drama in my article. (or my Xianxia one) I am simply summarizing the drama. If it appeals to someone, then they could watch it.
This is for everyone: I am not trying to argue. I hope it doesn't seem this way. I am trying my very best to answer questions.
I translated the summary of the book: The daughter of a pearl fisherman, Haishi, met a mermaid when she was a child, who left her the two words Lang Huan on her palm. And the pearls created by the mercreature’s tears resulted in her meeting the officials. The once handsome and young six-winged general, Qinghai Prince, only hides behind the emperor now, manipulating the black-feathered forest army. The entangled fate between him and Di Xu gradually disappeared on the specious smile his lips formed. In the big Zheng Dynasty, there was another big empire on the Nine Continents. The previous civil strife took away everything the young emperor Chu Zhongxu wanted to protect. The so-called civilians and nation were nothing but tools for him to demand liberation. Whether it was to be hated by others to be betrayed by his brother, nothing was important anymore. The peaceful and prosperous world he had created himself must be destroyed by himself. Thousands of horses are running, and the flags are changing. The world is magnificent, and this will become the legend of the nation. And the shiny and round merfolk pearls scattered everywhere on the ground reflect everyone’s swirling destiny.
It’s truly a Wuxia story. The only element is the immortal Kung Fu, but it’s not a true immortality like in…
Okay, tysm! If they're still debating, I'm just gonna let them stay confused. These people don't really deserve to understand the Wuxia genre anyway. I think that person is just hating on this drama at this point. :D
I could go on for hours. The recommendations above are some of my favorites, as well as MDL'ers favorites. I have asked numerous MDL'ers on the feeds, comments sections, and some close friends I have made here what their favorite Wuxia dramas are. My question produced, Word of Honor, The Legends, Ancient Detective, and the Moon Brightens for You. I added the Condor Heroes because this is an absolute must-watch in China. If you go to China and randomly pull a person in their 30s-80s off the street, chances are, they've seen a version or multiple versions of the Condor Trilogy.
I PROMISE, I am not being bias to any drama. I am simply giving good Wuxia recommendations from people's favorites, good ratings and reviews, and some dramas I really like. I am not trying to promote just one drama, or any of these dramas by including them here. They are solely to introduce Wuxia dramas to you guys. If you want to hate on a drama, please do it elsewhere.
Some other recs: (the list will get longer as I remember more dramas) -Listening Snow Tower -Handsome Siblings -Love in Between -The Silent Criminal -The Longest Day in Chang'an -The Romance of Hua Rong -First Sword of Wudang (airing) -And the Winner is Love -Under the Power -Nirvana in Fire 2 -Bloody Romance -Sword Dynasty -Legend of Awakening (There are more CURRENT dramas. Please let me know if you would like some old(er) Wuxia dramas.)
If you want some more Xianxia recs, please let me know! I'd be more than happy to provide a list. ^-^
Some recommended dramas have fantasy elements. They're Xianxia dramas, not Wuxia.
I'm going to go through all the recommended dramas on this article that have Xianxia elements (disclaimer: THERE MAY OR MAY NOT BE SMALL SPOILERS)
JOY OF LIFE: For you guys who have watched JoL, it may or may not be your "favorite Wuxia drama". Don't worry, Joy of Life is a Wuxia drama. That's what most other people and I classify it as well.
One day, as I did some more research on certain dramas, I came across a person who classified JoL as a Xianxia. Her reason was this: It has time travel. Okay okay, good point! I had never thought of the time travel aspect. But although there is time travel, this is only a small portion of the drama. It mainly focuses on Fan Xian's adventures in the dangerous politics. He, Uncle Wuzhu, and several others use pure martial arts to fight against other people.
WORD OF HONOR: Already talked about this drama in previous question.
THE LEGENDS: The Legends is very Xianxia, with its spirits, demons and all. But why would it be tagged as a Wuxia dramas then? Because I was unable to fit so many dramas in my Xianxia article, I put it here. It's not misleading, The Legends does have many Wuxia elements. The Legends is a great example of a drama with both Xianxia and Wuxia elements.
I will say it is more Xianxia than Wuxia. BUT I didn't get a chance to include it in my Xianxia article, and since it does match some Wuxia requirements, I decided to put it here. JUST SO YOU KNOW, just so you know. :D I apologize for any confusion. It is an intro article, so I didn't write much. :)
The Flame's Daughter: If you have watched The Flame's Daughter, you will definitely remember it as a Wuxia drama. This drama is a great example of Jiang Hu, or the pugilistic world. Sect leaders and members from all over Jiang Hu gather around to discuss matters and solve problems. The main characters mainly use martial arts. Cultivation, or nei gong, is also a very important skill in this drama, as it is used to restabilize martial artists when they have used a lot of their strength. One thing with a fantasy element is that the male lead, Yin Xue, is over one hundred years old in some mystical sect and there were revival attempts, and so on. ALTHOUGH that dos have some fantasy, this is not Xianxia. Remember, Xianxia is a CHINESE drama genre, so it is fantasy with CHINESE culture and mythology.
If you have any other questions about any other dramas, feel free to ask!
So the Untamed is Xianxia? What about Word of Honor? Shouldn't it be a Xianxia? The Untamed has martial arts and…
Xianxia is a relatively young Chinese drama genre. Its prominence has only stood out the last two decades or so. Some of the most famous Xianxias on MDL include Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, Ashes of Love, and also, The Untamed.
If you've watched The Untamed, you'll remember Lan Wangji (Lan Zhan) using his zither (Gu Qin) as his attack and defense. When he plucks on the strings, a blue light is omitted and is sent to wherever he wants it to go. THAT is not martial arts. He might have needed to cultivate himself to get to that level of power, but, as I mentioned in this article, people in both Xianxia and Wuxia dramas cultivate.
Then we come to Wei Wuxian (Wei Ying). Let me drop the bomb here: His demonic cultivation is not Wuxia. So are the demons. They belong in the Xianxia genre.
In the Untamed, we do see some fighting using martial arts, but most of the time, we see Lan Zhan with his zither, Wei Ying with his flute, Jiang Chen with his lightning whip, and so many more characters using fantasy weapons.
MOVING ON TO Word of Honor. I have not watched this drama, but after collecting information from quite a few people, I can now confidently say that WoH is a Wuxia drama. Think back. A drama having one immortal does not exactly mean that it is Xianxia. Many recent dramas have had both Xianxia and Wuxia elements, and it is perfectly fine to classify one as a Wuxia or a Xianxia at the same time. Some people even classify a drama as both a Wuxia and a Xianxia. (I sometimes do that). But sometimes, it's very clear what genre the drama is in. For example, Eternal Love, aka Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms. It is obviously not a Wuxia drama, with nine tailed foxes, demon clans, a Heavenly palace, and so many more fantasy elements mixed with Chinese mythology and culture. On the other hand, Princess Agents is a pure Wuxia drama. There are my mythical elements, and the characters practice martial arts and internal cultivation.
So, if you ever see someone classify the Untamed as a Xianxia while you classify it as a Wuxia, or the other way around, remember, you guys are BOTH RIGHT. While the Untamed has more Xianxia elements, it does have many Wuxia elements as well. For WoH, it leans much more to the Wuxia side.
Here's a better way to interpret this: I am 100% Chinese. My parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc, are all Chinese. My best friend, on the other hand, is 25% German, 25% Irish, and 50% Chinese. So is she going to say that she is of German, Irish, or Chinese heritage? Why can't she say all three? This is like Wuxia, Xianxia and Xuanhuan dramas. They may have elements of all three genres, two, or be purely one genre. :)
About the Xianxia elements though, I think my article might really help you: https://kisskh.at/article/cookie-done-devitto-done-introduction-to-xianxia-dramas
Yeah, NiF does have a lot of characters. Wuxia these days shouldn't be too hard to understand.
Would you say that the Wuxia is overwhelming, though?
