Please, please, I'm begging the vigilant, moral squad to read the warnings and tags, because they are there for…
Every piece of media is open to critique because media does not exist in a vacuum; it has real-world implications, especially when it deals with sensitive topics. Writers, filmmakers, and creators do not escape criticism simply because they claim their work is intended only for a niche audience that “understands” it.
Sexual assault in media, in particular, is too often used as a common and cheap plot device, adding little real narrative value while serving a darker purpose. People can defend the dark romance genre if they want, and they are free to enjoy it, but that does not mean it is beyond critique. It does not change the fact that the character is a rapist, and romanticising those actions does not place them beyond criticism.
I must say media literacy and awareness are definitely needed to watch this show. I have seen some people be obtuse, and I understand that maybe there are some things people haven't experienced in real life, so they cannot understand why the characters reacted that way. Though I wish Fujisawa received stronger punishment, how that played out was unfortunately realistic and relatable to many people.
