On We Made a Beautiful Bouquet Dec 11, 2023
The scene where they both cried while hugging each other, grieving together for their bygone past selves and the end of their love. I feel like the entire movie was a build up to that (and the preceding conversation in the family restaurant) scene and it was worth it. I didn't know a break up scene can be filmed that way and it was genuinely beautiful. The choice to make them cry together really makes a difference imo, had they cried separately at different times/places it would've given the impression that they're sad about the break up because they still had lingering feelings instead.

Title Hard Days
Probably my favorite action stuff from the director. Few moments that should've been easy to predict but I was genuinely caught off guard due to how fluid the scene executions are. Some of the twists near the end feel kinda cheap sort of in an intentionally unserious way, but I'm not even that mad since I started the movie with no expectation and enjoyed it more than I thought I would already. It was fun.

A lot of Japanese drama writers are just utter garbage TBVH. You'll find no logic, no emotions, no humane behaviour…
I wouldn't say how Miri is written is wholly unrealistic or unrelatable tho, just that particular scene probably would've been easier to digest if this was a 90s dorama.
On Every Precious Moment Nov 25, 2023
You can immediately tell from the 1st ep that the writer was born in the 60s or earlier with how FL was willing to follow a stranger male to some abandoned building in remote areas no question asked and somehow the drama frames that as 'romantic escapade' or something lol.

Title My Second Aoharu Spoiler
Kinda like those 90s-00s 'trendy' dorama; older woman younger man, sharehouse, shared group of friends, youth…
Also I wonder how the job market is for architecture graduates there in Japan. In her previous job Sayako was pretty much living from paycheck to paycheck but it's not like her financial situation can automatically get better just because she has college degree, it depends on the economy and there's issue with her age too as some industry/company can be ageist. I hope the drama will get there at some point since by ep 5 she's already in her second year in uni.

Kinda like those 90s-00s 'trendy' dorama; older woman younger man, sharehouse, shared group of friends, youth living their best life summer partying and bbq-ing while worrying about future careers, both leads having their own separate love interests at the beginning so they bonded as friends first, etc. Hirose Alice has excellent comedic timing as always, with a knack of making her characters likable and sympathetic. Chemistry is in the eyes of the beholder I suppose but I think both leads are equally convincing portraying someone in love.

The last episode feels like a merge of the first 3 eps as it mixed all the main themes from there (crave for validation/attention, doxing, cyber-lynching) and put them in one episode. As far as commentary on misuse of internet/social media and how it can impact lives goes this one doesn't say anything revelatory, but how the plot unfolds in each episode might keep the interest of those with morbid curiosity. Nothing too far-fetched or too allegorical, pretty straightforward and grounded with easily digested messages/values. What I found lacking is how the show offers neither compelling argument or possible solution to the issues presented for viewers to ponder about, nor salvation for the characters, who interestingly can be both the perpetrator and the victim in each story. I finished each episode feeling rather hollow instead.

Not exactly 'romance' as romantic relationships here are used as platform to discuss modern social phenomenons (within the context of Japanese culture) related to dating and marriage and explore characters growth and self-discoveries. Similar to Love Shuffle, Date, NigeHaji etc it has more substance than your usual fluff but the thing is the characters aren't particularly likable or entertaining either unlike with previously mentioned shows imo. I don't find them annoying per se they just don't "pop" to me. Still I think just because the show challenges and questions some values that are normally accepted at face value, doesn't automatically makes it invalidating those values either. I agree in the process to do so the scripting can be a bit awkward and partial tho. Alas, everyone will process different things differently, so.
On As Long as We Both Shall Live Oct 15, 2023
Prefer this one compares to the anime. Miyo really comes alive through Imada Mio's performance while Kiyoka's character is given more depth through his bonding with his squad. In the anime it feels like he was just there to save Miyo in the beginning and then to be saved by Miyo at the end as culmination of her character growth lol. Granted since I've seen the anime it's most likely that I just fill in in my mind whatever wasn't explained in the movie so I was neither lost nor bothered with the pacing. I was wondering why they seem to set out to push and milk this particular IP with anime, manga, and even decently produced live action adaptation but now I kinda see the potential.

I haven't seen their movie "My Happy Marriage" yet but based on the reviews and comments online, apparently their…
Yup now I'm curious about that one too

Have to give it to Meguro Ren and Imada Mio though, I don't remember the last time a jdrama pair have this much chemistry. I can't tell if their chemistry is wasted here because it's not romance show or precisely because it's not romance that their characters and dynamic are allowed to be what they are and this resulted in the chemistry they have. Anyway, thanks to blitzfansub for subbing the show.
On From Me to You Sep 19, 2023
Sorry but the one who played Ryu is the biggest miscast. And I actually think they rushed things too much. The manga is all about characters journey, sensibility and emotional struggles rather than plot, but here it doesn't feel I was given chance to drown and indulge myself in the characters' joy and pain, or their moment of strengths and weaknesses, as it rushed itself to reach another plot milestone and moved on to the next arc. Important manga scenes are adapted almost 1:1 but they left out the feels and execution felt flat overall. As a result I don't feel much towards these characters, it felt 'boring' not because nothing happened but more because I can't afford to care about anything that transpires on screen.
On Once upon a Crime Sep 16, 2023
Started as bigger budget yuusha yoshihiko-esque but with european fairytale instead of RPG, ended up being a detective movie. I'd prefer if they weaved more of the fairytale elements to the plot instead of completely abandoning it in the middle parts, but it's not bad as it is.
On Cinderellas of Midsummer Sep 10, 2023
Mori Nana effortlessly outperforms everyone here despite being the youngest, what a talent. What happened to Mizukami Koshi though, he's stiff all over, I think he was better in his debut work few years ago.
On Trillion Game Sep 4, 2023
Sorry but the show is starting to lose me. No matter what new obstacle introduced in each episode, they have no hook as our heroes will just plot-convenienced their way to victory, while the rest of the characters are turned into slaves to the plot to make it happen. It's repetitive, predictable and not fun. And when it's not fun it gets difficult to ignore the clearly superficial knowledge the show has about every industry it tries to represent in the show.
On Pending Train Aug 19, 2023
Among many flaws the show has frankly "focusing too much on love triangle" is not one of them. It's just characters developing crushes on each other like normal, romantic feelings are hardly ever put in a focus or even used as character's motivation let alone milked as source of conflicts.

Title #Cold Game
The part I enjoyed most in this show is actually the characters. Unlike other survival shows where the charas are just responding to series of life-threatening situations, here on top of that they also take active roles moving the plot to unpredictable directions in their attempt to fulfill their own respective agendas. Too bad they aren't utilized more and the show sort of ended up being flat in the end.
On Pending Train Aug 13, 2023
Typical cheese-fest TBS production. The show is more characters-focused than plot-focused, with the writing's primary aim in all stages is to develop and solve characters' internal and interpersonal problems first, before perfunctorily deal with external issues. Thing is the way the show went about it is by making the characters taking turn giving lecture to each other, either politely or aggressively depending on the intensity of the background music. The way I see it in this particular setting though, they haven't been 'stranded' for that long, the situation is still relatively under control with their primary needs still being met, people aren't dying left and right due to some kind of extreme condition or life-threatening entity, and most major conflict escalations are caused by misunderstandings, so I can kind of see how talk-no-juutsu would still work lol. Folks who expected intense survival drama would naturally be disappointed, I personally didn't expect anything going in looking at the broadcasting station and the writer's body of works being a mixed bag at best. I do think the much less ambitious, ikemen-less late night dorama Cold Game is the more interesting non-edgy post apocalyptic survival drama between the two though.
