This was me while watching SIMM! Can feel you 🤝
I agree with you on both counts! I was really enjoying SIMM, even though it wasn't fresh or original. Then by the last few episodes, I just didn't care anymore, partly because of all of the pointless love triangles and lack of communication that did nothing for the plot. But I'm struggling from the get go to get through this one. In SIMM, I at least liked the characters. Everyone is flat and boring in this, and most of them suck or are annoying.

Does this get any better? I had a hard time finishing the first episode. Nothing about the story makes any sense.…
I personally am struggling to get through it. It depends on what you're into, I suppose. It pushes weird, gross themes and tropes that I can't stand, while somehow being both cliche and nonsensical. The drama it creates is always cheap and shallow, so it feels almost exploitative. Most of all, I just don't care about any of the characters. They're shallow and dull, and only one of them has any background story or history, all of which is summed up by him being sad about his ex-girlfriend's wedding. So no, I wouldn't say it gets better. Lack of chemistry, lack of interesting story, lack of people to root for. I feel like a lot of people are just excited it isn't another school setting, and while I agree that that's a small win, it's an awfully low bar.

Title Where to Go Spoiler
Is it that GaGaOOLaLa gets off on finding as many downer gay shorts as possible, or is it just that shorts are still in the stage that all shows and movies with gay characters used to be, where everything was "realistic," meaning gay characters don't get happy endings. If it were more unusual, it'd have more of an impact, but these themes are the vast majority, which always make me feel a little bitter. They don't spend enough time really dissecting the issues to merit their use, and if you have a problem with that, people who enjoy misery porn get very angry and snobby about it. "It's realistic!" It's not, though. It's not realistic to act like gay romance can never have a happy ending. This is a very overdone, "artsy" sort of approach to gay stories that's tied into the layers of homophobia still present in non-queer directors and internalized in the queer ones.

Anyway, this is already a rant, and I could say so much more, but what does it really matter? This short isn't as bad as some of the others, but I've watched so many on GaGaOOLaLa that I'm to the point of not wanting to watch them anymore. I think I saw one actual happy, not just ambiguous, one, and even that one felt a little flat. I'm just tired of this pretentious, depressing crap when it comes to queer cinema. I can't believe we still haven't moved past this. Or maybe I'm just running into an unfortunate amount of low quality. I'm glad MDL is here, because I can avoid wasting time on sad, pointless stories.

If anyone sees this, can you spoil the ending for me? Is it happy or sad, or bittersweet? Or open? I'm cautious since it feels like BL from China has to have a sudden sad ending.
