2 055 / 5 000 I will never forget the first drama I watched.
I was taking my first steps in becoming interested in Asian culture. It was 2012 and I was in high school then. I've always liked romance novels but to be honest I was a little scared to watch something Asian. Fortunately, I quite easily succumbed to my friend's persuasion (thanks a lot for getting me into this!) and promised to watch this particular drama that she had told me about countless times.
You're Beautiful.
A girl pretending to be a boy didn't surprise me at all. I encountered this trope in the movie "She's the Man" with Amanda Bynes. However, You're Beautiful... It's hard for me to call it anything else than fascination. From the first minutes I was surprised by the mood I felt during the screening. I was scared when I saw the church, nuns and so on, but in a moment I was "chased" by Park Shin Hye on a sweet pink scooter. I liked the specific sense of humor (years later I know it's thanks to the Hong sisters, who were responsible for the script). This is one of the main advantages of You're Beautiful. Not to mention the beautiful soundtrack and male cast. Jeremy (Lee Hong Ki) will remain in my heart forever! At first, I was rooting for Shin Woo (Jung Yong Hwa) more, but Tae Kyung (Jang Geun Suk) quickly overtook him... I still don't know how.
That's how I watched the whole thing in one go. All sixteen episodes. Yes, I spent the night. Yes, the next day I went to school and shared my impressions with my friend. She recommended me the next dramas because "she knew it would end like this."
The funniest thing is that I didn't expect much from watching it. At most, I'll be bored. I experienced the most pleasant disappointment ever - I was wrong. I was not bored. Not once, even rewatching in 2024 sometime in the spring. I watched this drama several times, I got into this habit with everything I like "more". Honestly, after all these years, You're Beautiful doesn't seem like a masterpiece to me, but it certainly deserves to be called a nostalgic gem.
When I watched Perfect Marriage Revenge (the first drama after a long break from kdramas and dramas in general) I knew I knew this face from somewhere...
But when I saw that Sung Hoon played Cheon Eum Ja (he's amazing) in Faith, for some reason I burst out laughing. It's amazing to find actors in their old roles. I felt like a n00b drama again. A refreshing feeling, I missed it so much.
