Story: - slice of life between a happily married couple - oops, no, the ML is actually a scheming Prince trying to hunt down a bandit - oops, no, the FL is actually a scheming bandit who realizes she's been deceived and her feelings played with - FL gets her revenge against the ML for deceiving her. - ML chases and suffers for quite a while ("wife-chasing crematorium, as the c-novel trope is called) before he can earn her forgiveness - ML and FL fight external battles to get their HE - there's actually a full blown wedding scene!!! - really enjoyed the visuals, music, plot, chemistry, etc. The voice acting was especially good. The ML and FL had gentle, soft, educated voices that fit them to a T.
currently on ep 11, i just got overwhelmed with how much cui jiu lying to liu miantang. the story is little bit…
Oh don't worry. Later on, the ML suffers plenty as he tries to beg for forgiveness from the FL - the story turns into a full blown wife-chasing-crematorium story arc for many episodes. Hahahaha.
Initially in the drama, I was confused by the ML. He has this amiable, open, gentle expression, but given his ruthless fighting and careful navigation of court politics, he's also very cunning, scheming, and brutal. Took me a while to associate that side of him (in the script) with the ML's puppy face.
And the actor is so tall, it's funny when he's in a crowd, he's easily a head taller than everyone.
The villain is so annoying, I'm binging just to see the villain get killed off....
After author Ilona Andrews recommended this drama who on her blog, I binged the first 38 episodes in a few days.…
1. FL is a modern woman (business/heiress) who transmigrated over into ancient times as a baby. Grandpa Hua could see how special she was, so he spent more time teaching/doting on her. Because she's a transmigrator with a lot of life experience, that's why she's so mature/smart/money-making. 2. The Imperial Guard ransacked their home, and the Emperor's eunuch read the imperial edict of confiscature/exile, not the ML and his Security Bureau. 3. The FL took over the family right away, not the third aunt initially. 4. FL hid over 2,000 taels in the house and carried it away after they left their home, rather than the books in the drama. 5. After they left the official home, they still had a smaller home in the southern part of the city, and two homes in the suburbs (one with fruit orchards), not just the one riverside home in the boonies. 6. It was the FL's idea to sew money into the exile's clothing, and the officials didn't find it, so she wasn't punished for it like in the drama. 7. Over 300 servants were left after their assets were confiscated.
After author Ilona Andrews recommended this drama who on her blog, I binged the first 38 episodes in a few days. While waiting for the finale to sub, I started reading the novel by MTL, and here are some thoughts from the first 10 chapters of the novel in a spoiler comment below.
Soooo, after the huge success of Legend of Shen Li, I wonder if Zanilla Zhao would get together a team and make Princess Agents 2? I think part of the better production/success of Legend of Shen Li is because Zanilla Zhao had a bigger say in the production?
Update: Thanks everyone. I don't follow the extra stuff (news, interviews, social media) for c-ent, so I didn't know.
How do you guys feel abt LGX as XZ, I am totally loving it but some are saying he looks a bit too "bulky" they…
I love his taller, stronger, bulkier physique. He is an ancient god, after all. Nice contrast to the other skinny youngsters. And I like to pretend he and the FL are reincarnations of the leads from the Princess Agents...
They have very silly rules - ancient Gods should be encouraged to love and marry to produce the next generation…
Update: Oh, now I see a scene with several older women with white/grey hair in episode 22. Except it's not a nice scene...I guess when times are good only young women are shown (dancing and carousing at the heavenly banquet), but when times are sad (war), that's when the widows and grandmas show up on screen. Sigh.
They have very silly rules - ancient Gods should be encouraged to love and marry to produce the next generation…
I think it's a reflection of c-novels, where there are often many excellent, complex male characters, but a severe shortage of interesting, complex female characters. Too often, female NPCs are stupid jealous foils for the amazing FL, like the heavenly females here.
Then it gets translated to a drama, and most of the background NPCs (heavenly banquet guests, army soldiers) are shown as male, so the few idiotic female heavenly NPCs that are shown in the drama make women look bad for the entire realm. It doesn't help that I haven't seen a heavenly/diviner female over 20 yet.
I'll just remember the brave city women living with the miasma in the immortal/demon realm, the little girls, widows, etc.
(Sorry, using both translated terms because Viki uses two versions as the drama progresses. I think they eventually synch the names/titles after their subbers have more time)

Hahaha. Did you notice the ancient gods were all male? They spontaneously appear as born.
As for the younger immortals/gods/diviners, I think the novel explained that many were once mortals who cultivated into immortality, so their numbers kept increasing, which caused conflict historically with the demon/yao/immortal realms.
As for the the heavenly king's grandkids - so far I haven't seen any biological mother or grandma in the god/diviner realm in the drama, their entire realm appears to be just old men, young men, and young women.
For all the thought and care they put into this gorgeous drama, I kind of wish they'd included more female deities in the demon/immortal army, and the ancient god pantheon. So far, FL is the only female shown in any army, and there are no female ancient gods. Actually, other than the silly immortal fangirls, there are few immortal females.
There are so many super old male immortals (with hilariously full heads of hair) who appear over 90, but the female immortals all seem to be under 25, except for the demon emperor mom and the lowly earth immortals. Sigh.
On the other hand, in the novel the demon/immortal emperor always wears a face mask that disguises her as a man, but in the drama they openly show her as a female.
I do really like being able to hear the FL's inner monologue, like in the novel. She's very measured and practical (until she loses her temper) as a military general.
Love the OST. The heroic music, the soaring vocals, really add emotional depth to the scenes.
Episode 19 - OMG, it's a crazed immortal fangirl club for the ancient god....
You Lan (Jackie Li)'s green eye makeup looks ghastly. Wish they'd given her nice eye makeup like the other 3 immortal girls, who have brightening blue eye shadow, glitter eyeliner, pink warm eye shadow, and/or bolder black eyeliner.
So hilarious to see FL making trouble at Furong's home, when he made such a ruckus at hers.
at the end of the drama, xingzhi remains as ancient god? or he is weakened till the end? (i dont like this concept…
***Major novel spoilers:***
In the novel, he sacrifices his waning/about to expire ancient deity power to remove the abyss and the sky beyond heaven realms (because alternatively, if he died naturally or had his godhood abolished because of contravening Natural Law/Heavenly Dao for love (like his friend Qinghe), all of the sky beyond heaven realm and the abyss and the demon/immortal realm would fall apart. So he chose the former in a somewhat complicated technique.
Fortunately, his ancient friends' remnant powers gave a sliver to him and he eventually survives as a very weak immortal. And the FL finds him again.
So the FL and ML end up the way they fell in love - in the mortal world living a leisurely life, her the domineering phoenix, and him the sly, elegant, weakling - except he's an immortal, so he'll live forever with her. And she had promised him 2 things. First, he wanted some trivial thing (I can't remember). Second, he wanted lots of kids with her...

"Shen Li and Xing Zhi settled down in the small house. Life appeared to have returned to the way it was before; the sickly scholar and the domineering queen. ..
“Shen Li.” He called out to her suddenly, “I’m no longer as strong as I used to be, do you despise me?”
Shen Li glanced at him and automatically asked: “Why would I despise you? In the beginning, I fell in love with just a sick and weak mortal.”
They went around in a circle and still returned back to the starting point.
For a moment, Xing Zhi was stunned, but then he immediately smiled and said no more. The last deity in this world was gone, but in its place was an idle immortal.
Year after year, the time in the Mortal Realm passed very slowly, the grape vines in Shen Li and Xing Zhi’s little backyard had already produced large bunches of grapes.
One day, under the grapevines, on the rocking chair, the sun was shining on Xing Zhi’s face. His eyes were closed while taking a break, suddenly he heard a voice say: “Taste these grapes.”
Xing Zhi opened his eyes and saw Shen Li standing beside him. Against the backlighting of the sun, her silhouette was simply too beautiful. When Xing Zhi reached out to take the grapes, he suddenly remembered something and said: “Shen Li, you still owe me two wishes from before.”
Stunned, Shen Li pondered for a long time, and seemed to remember something about this matter: “What else do you want to wish for?”
“My first wish, in the future, every summer, you will help me pick grapes.”
Shen Li went and laid down on the rocking chair next to him, nodding in agreement: “Okay.”
“My second wish…”
Shen Li turned her head to look at him: “Are you going to make all your wishes today?”
At the exact same moment, Xing Zhi also turned his head to look at her. They were so close that they were breathing one another’s breath. Xing Zhi smiling said: “It’s because my second wish will take a long time to accomplish.” He moved his body over and quietly dropped a kiss on Shen Li’s lips.
“Help me have as many children as a bunch of grapes.” Startled, Shen Li pushed him and ran away: “You’re completely crazy and ridiculous!”
In the backyard, only Xing Zhi’s neverending chuckles were left.
At the same time, the sunshine was just perfect. "
The FL's eyes are so bright and speaking. Her personality is so fierce and brave, it's startling to realize how delicate and slight she is next to the much bigger ML. The camera is able to capture the ML's best angles in his flowing robes, or in his fitted black guard clothes.
Weird. I’ve been watching on Viki since day one and it has always been those other ones for me (diviners, extranatural,…
I like celestial and spirit realms! As for Azure Sky King, it has to do with the blue coloured Azure Sky Pearl mentioned in the novel. But in the drama, they made it red...
Actually, I wonder why translators don't translate demon/yao as shapeshifters instead. They're natural animals/plants/rocks that cultivate to a human form, and then can freely shapeshift after...
I heard that ZLY reached out to LGX and asked him to star with her again and of course he agreed! 🤭
That's so heartwarming to hear. On c-ent websites, sometimes they mention other FL and MLs not getting along in other dramas, or being competitive, or their fans fighting online, but here the two leads obviously get along so well if they choose to do another drama together.
