>I also don’t understand why the FL was nothing but cold and rude and hostile to him from the moment she…
Only after she broke up with him, saying she never thought they were going to last anyway and she had no interest in eloping with him. She knows him and his insecurities better than anyone so it’s unfair of her to blame him in this situation. After she dumped him, what did he have left aside from his sick mother and his career?
Re: the FL and SML’s relationship . . . what’s frustrating is they were together for five years but it was never mentioned in the drama. tvN released a recap vid of their relationship that mentions it. It’s on their YouTube channel but for some reason, it’s only available for viewing in South Korea. A fan posted it on IG with subtitles: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DYg0CdIvpBU/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==.
I think the fact that they were together for five years is critical to understanding their relationship and why he was still so broken. So many people wrote him off as a delusional, obsessive, sexual-assaulting creep (because of the hugs and shoulder grasps) so it would have been helpful to show how serious they used to be.
I also don’t understand why the FL was nothing but cold and rude and hostile to him from the moment she returned to Seoul. She may have been trying to protect him on the sly but she acted as if she hated him. Not once did she show even a smidgeon of empathy or affection or regret towards him. Even though she had clearly moved on, there should have been be some subtle indications that she was in love with the man for five years.
And did he really deserve that much hate? After all, *she’s* the one who broke up with *him*. I get that she was angry he didn’t fight for their love like she secretly wanted him to but has she *met* the man? Not only is he *not* psychic, but after years of psychological abuse at the hands of his family, did she really expect him to have the confidence and courage to fight her decision to break up when she’d made it very clear she didn’t want to run off and elope with him and she never thought they’d last anyway?
Her self-sabotaging ways almost worked with the ML too. Despite his abundance of confidence because of his happy childhood and illustrious career, he’d also given up on her and was packing for California. If it hadn’t been for his sister knocking some sense into him, he would have been in the exact same boat as the SML. Unfortunately for the SML, he didn’t have a single supportive person in his life to encourage him to fight for what he wanted other than the FL but she chose to abandon him.
Given the way they met, I wonder if she even worried about his state of mind after she broke up with him? Did she even consider the fact that he might give up on life again? Apparently not.
What we really needed was a conversation where she apologizes to him for throwing away their relationship and explains why she did it. She explained her reasoning (the self sabotaging, doesn’t know how to be happy stuff) to the ML but not to JJY who is the one person who actually deserved the explanation.
So he respected her wishes to break up, let her go, and lived his life as best he could. Until she comes back to Seoul and starts treating him like she hates him. So he tries to talk to her but she keeps freezing him out and treating him like he’s a creep who’s harassing her.
To this day, he doesn’t understand why she abandoned him. All he knows is “I never expected us to last anyway” and “I have no interest in running away with you.”
