Your heart is in the right place, but this horrible racist hate towards Asians has been going on for a long time. The pandemic made it much, much worse for many Asians throughout the world, nevermind just in New York city. I'm from a large city also & the same things have happened here & my city has a wonderfully large Asian community of hundreds of thousands.
My country doesn't have a melting pot orientation like the U.S. does, we do our best to have multiculturalism, so people of many cultures don't have to blend in, but can be, dress & speak as they choose. I hope that we can be welcoming & supportive of everyone & do our best to stop racism.
