Sure, agree to disagree but I never said or making it seem like the lies were horrible things. I just said what they are, lies. Lies don't have to be horrible for someone not to like it. And yes, that's how the story goes but lets be clear, she was never mean to him. Indifferent sure but that's not a target at Ml, thats her and the personality HE fell for.
Some people see her as mean, some don't and enjoy the cold character. I don't get how she has been mean to him. She's been polite, just not as passionate as him. I don't blame him for having secrets either but you can't treat her as a the devil because she didn't like that he lied while trying to be in a relationship with her. She picked him because he'll die soon but there isn't any other secret plan. More importantly, she told him what she needed to tell him up-front, She said she wasn't love in with him and she might not love him. She told him that she wants an alliance to protect the northwest and she wants them to support each other. Like, why wouldn't she be weary that he might scheme against her when he's so easily able to say he wants a relationship from her while not telling her that he's actually powerful, has people in court and he's not as frail as he puts on. There are WHOLE aspects of himself that he's keeping from her while she is up-front about the type of person she is and what she wants. From her POV, she's been honest her wants and who she is and he's keeping secrets. Secrets that prevent her from making an informed choice on who she wants to marry. The issue with eventually is, it that someone can find out not from you. When was his eventually, when they get married? Days after, after they have kids. So, she can find out she made her choice to get married without knowing everything about her marriage partner. But finding out something about something, finding out they lied no matter how justified other people might feel about the lie, doesn't change the fact that they lied and doesn't make someone a monster for reevaluating if they would like to continue a relationship.
Ep. 10-11: Okay I like FL's no-nonsense attitude towards enemies. All these assassination attempts on her life…
I disagree with the aspect that its illogical for take him out of the running because of lies. I don't think she's unworthy of him now, because ML knows what he's getting with her. She has a powerful army and family behind her, to be behind him. And affection given, isn't affection owed. I agree he is more human that her but that's just her personality (now, seeing as lady gu's personality is the more dominant one)
His secret doesn't mean he's untrustworthy but his lies does. If he never approached her under the lies, it would be a secret but he deceived her by pretending to be three different people and then playing a frail prince, when he isn't as a frail as he seems. While she chose him because he was weak and seemginly only has x amount of years to live, if he had presented himself as his true self, it doesn't mean he was all the way out of the running, he could've had other qualities shown that made him the best pick. She doesn't want to turn him into a vegetable, she wants an easy life without an overbearing husband. At least that's what he can offer, if he had backing and things the other Princes had, then I'm sure she'd find another quality or find a way to deal. And when it comes to the issue at had (rejecting him because of the lies), it's not about wanting to control him or that he suddenly is capable, it's about the lie.
You say she's deceptive, cold and manipulative and say it like it's bad but its seemingly okay for the crown prince to be that way. Aside from being cold (which he isn't but CAN be), he has those same traits and it's doing on a far grander scale then the FL is. She also doesn't rejoice in telling people that? When did she brag about it?
It's kinda wild reading that when she was honest with the ML, in the way he hasn't been. She didn't use pretty lies to attract his attention, she didn't pretend to have feelings for him. She told him honestly that she has no feelings for him, that she wants is an alliance/partnership. Even when he said she could lie and he would believe it, she still chose NOT to lie and was just as honest about everything. She laid her cards on the table, told him what she wanted and what he could offer. Has he laid all of his cards on the table yet? No.
Be it being cold or moving things around, she hasn't lied about who she is or want she wants. She's frank and honest. So, yes, she will reject someone who has that much power, lied to her and is still keeping it from her. That doesn't make her wrong. That doesn't make her underserving, it makes her true to her character. Why is she getting more heat for not accepting a lie than he is for lying while he's telling her to trust him and trying be with her romantically.
Again, he said he's willing to believe a lie but she was an honest person and didn't lie. That shows her integrity.
I do agree the show could've shown some interactions when she was lady gu but they did stay true to the novel but the novel doesn't go in depth about her life as lady gu. But from how others talk about her, she wasn't super empathetic as lady gu and was even colder than the fl is now. But people have talked about how she's changed, you could even see it in the ship scene at the 1st ep, she seemed a lot more free and bubbly but not really an imposter because the true xihe feelings and emotions are there. When you made it to ep 11, so when she was thinking about her brother, those were true emotions, not...i'm playing a role. So its more like their souls merged than someone being replaced.
- Riddles - people talked like that back in the day, also while no one knows what someone will do after marriage, it's not bad to ask them and get a feel? it's wild to think that as a princess of the northwest, she wouldn't try and feel out how her future husband feels about her homeland. you can also sense stuff with peoples answers, but yeah, like anyone getting into a relationship, she will ask about the important things just to have foundation. its one thing if they lie to you and change but its another if you dont do your own due work and ask questions.
- Bu Shulin - why wouldn't she be closer to a woman? you're upset that there isn't any sisterhood but also complain about the sisterhood she's forming with shulin. a lot of things could get both bu shulin and the fl killed, bu shulin is a hostage and the only child in her family. she's doing it to protect her familys land. xihe is also a hostage in a way, they called her to the capitol to tie her to a prince because her family is too powerful and loved in the northwest, it's the same reason the gu family was killed, because they held power in court. that being said, because bu shulin is a woman, which why the fl would be closer to her than the ml, i don't see why that is an issue
- not all fl are jealous, prince changtai wife didn't like xihe but it's clear she's not jealous and she doesn't like any of the royals - the younger gu sister would be jealous of any woman prince changqing would like - the younger sister isn't jealous, she just wants love and family - the rest are normal levels you would expect in a historical drama where that was the norm
all of the guys don't love her, only two have true feelings, huayong and prince lei, - prince yu, prince ning ONLY want her because they have other women they actually love and want to use her as cover - i don't think prince changtai has any romantic interest and seems pretty focused on his wife - prince changqing only showed interest in her when realizes she might be lady gu in some way - so only two princes love her / are willing to die, the others only see her as another person or a pawn to be used to get access to the ones they really like
on rooting for her, that's a personal matter. so fair enough if you can't root for her because she's cold, i still root for her because she's an honest bad ass that is honest about what she wants. also, what are her never ending demands and expectations that set on him? what has she demanded from him, when has she sought him out for help? what has she asked for him? everything he as done for her, as been his own choice. she's not unreasonable at all, since you've seen up until the most recent eps, when the ml did the thing for the fl, his assistant says that they should tell her that they did it, the ml responds that if she knew it was him, she would try to find a way to repay him in kind. how is that a person who has never ending demands and expectations but honestly, she's not demanded one thing from him. i'm high lightening him because you said that she especially does that to him but we've not seen that. the other things she's asked from people...are normal because it's been investigations into who has been trying to harm her, the other time she asked for something was in exchange for keeping shulin secret, and even when she has shulin to get the bee's...it was for huayong eyes.
i also don't understand how she's not worth the fuss (even tho she hasn't fussed) or human being or buddy when...
she helped the ml not knowing it was him and giving away the rare life saving herb to repay kindness because someone helped her
helped out the sick kid and wanted more funds to go into the military camp
sent the ml gifts and etc when she didn't have to or make him the med pillow when he pretty asked for the recipe
even if she doesn't like her sister, gave her advice on how to life her life, reminding her that she doesn't need to cling to man thats all words and no action, reminded her that she was a shen daughter and she had plenty of paths to choose
gave her maid a second chance when she following other peoples orders
she might not be the warmest person but she's not heartless either
i don't think the character is perfect but some of the stuff you said wasn't true, didn't match up with what shown on screen and calling her illogical because she was open and honest with the ml and didn't give her that in return.
Seeing as what she has done to other people, she's far from being ruthless when it comes to him. I know he did nothing to harm her but doesn't mean the lie is okay. Esp, if you save me and don't own up to the truth, what did you save me for? Xihe, even if she lied to the King and the other Princes about loving the Crown Prince, she laid all of her cards on the table when it came to talking to the Crown Prince. She didn't lie to him about loving him, she didn't make any promises, She was her honest and true self. She wants a partnership/marriage and that can't be based on lies, even if you were doing a good thing. And being cold to someone who is warm to her doesn't make her a bitch. She's cold, not heartless. She's polite to him, she allows him to take small liberties, she was far more open with him than most other princes, she just didn't return his romantic feelings but she was rude or mean or dismissive.
she's not a bitch, she's sure about what she wants. honesty is one of those things. it doesn't matter how much the crown prince is in love with her if he can't be honest with her. she doesnt want love, she told him straight up, she wants a partner that will help her protect the north west. its great that he saved her but its not great that he kept it from her. even after she was open and honest about herself, how could she trust him if he lies so easily? why is she a bitch for staying true to herself? and being honest about it
gonna post my full thoughts overall bc i just watched eps 1-8
they're staying pretty true to the novel, which brings me to the first thing. the pacing is quick. it seems they want to get as much of the novel as possible but only have 36 eps, so maybe they will slow down. that being said, getting thrown into the story is just how the novel starts. we read lady gu ending her life, next chapter the souls are merging. it does seem like lady gu personality is dominant even though the two merged. but the novel just continues on with the present and we dont look too closely at the background of either.
the drama is leaning more slice of life / comedy, the most amazing thing? no but its a fun and simple watch
i also enjoy how they've managed to weave things together. like the doctor, in the novel im pretty sure was introduce to the crown prince through xihe but having them in the novel takes out needing to spend time on going through that arc, just a few things have been woven together or cut down to just the needed characters
characters:
the princes but crown prince - im impressed with what they did with them so far. esp changqing. shout out to royal rumors otp.
crown prince - honestly copy for copy, he's over the moon and down bad for xihe as he is in the novel
shu lin and jin bai - my second otp in the making, i cant wait for the future with them, ya'll will see what i mean
xihe - off the bat, if you dont like a mary sue lead....i'd stop watching. xihe succeeds no matter what. she is op and rarely gets anything wrong. what she doesn't know, the crown prince will let her know. i'd say the biggest arc for her would be learning to love. romantic love. also if you think xihe is cold... she's colder in the novel. some examples, the scene with the cat was NOT as wholesome in the novel. she rarely jokes and smiles and etc as she does with shulin. she was way nicer and more understanding towards her half-sister than she is in the novel. so i do enjoy those changes.
overall, im having a good time and im about to watch ep 9!
Some people here claim to be the novel reader, yet act pissed about the second trailer. Have you really read the…
Only person did anything close to complaining and it wasn’t even a big deal. I didn’t say the novel was bad or did I say they needed be dumbed down. I just commented that it wasn’t the most exciting novel of the leads have no stakes. And even then, I said that wouldnt have been an issue if the novel was shorter. The novel ‘Deng Hua Xiao’ also has female lead whose schemes and plots always succeed but it’s a short read so that part doesn’t become as noticeable or stale. The person complaining (me) also didn’t complain about the ml personality or the fl personality. A strong & smart female lead occasionally not succeeding doesn’t make it dumb or useless. It’s makes a complex character that can have flaws, still be amazing and you root for her even more to succeed.
Also, if people (even if they’re novel readers) liked the darker vibe more than the comedic one, that’s okay. I, personally, love the fact that they might lead into comedy but it’s okay if people are like, eh, that’s not what I wanted.
i'm on chapter 635 of novel, i wanted to know, does the character have any stakes? or does anything interesting…
I don't think it's a bad novel, I was just wondering if anything interesting happened that actually gave the characters stakes. I'm never worried about anything that happens and there is no rush or suspense because I figure it'll be good at the end. I also don't believe that if plans encounter hitches and doesn't go smoothly, that means someone is dumb. Life happens and things can wrong, and it doesn't have to permanently wrong but I think hiccups can happen without a character being dumb. I mean, there is a foil to being overly intelligent and over confident. I made it half-way through the novel which shows I had interest, it just felt like a repeating plot after 635 chapters, but doesn't mean I don't value the plot, I enjoy both the leads, I found some parts very funny and I enjoy the thought and work put into the world-building in the side characters. I didn't really comment on the ml personality or character type. I just said that there were some boundaries I liked for the fl lead that I felt like could've been kept without her giving into the ml whining. But that doesn't mean I have an issue with the ml as a character. I also didn't say it wasn't good enough for me because I don't think boring at point = bad. I just wanted to know if after the point I stated, do more interesting things happen, do the characters get into things that will have me actually worried about the out-come and rooting for them to win or is it just every time they plot, it turns out flawlessly without stakes and does more character growth happen (like with the sisters for example but really the dad and the brother). I think people can appreciate a work but still have thoughts/criticisms. thank you for the reply.
i really enjoyed the comedic vibes of the second trailer, id be happy if the drama leaned more into comedy. where i am now, the novel bores me and im struggling to finish. i dont like way the fl gives into the whininess of the ml at times in the novel. everything goes perfectly as planned (so far) so it feels like a repeating plot, it does have funny moments and if they highlighted that more, i'd be down
People here who are having second thoughts after watching the second trailer. I assure you, this isn't a typical…
i'm on chapter 635 of novel, i wanted to know, does the character have any stakes? or does anything interesting happen? mainly, im struggling bc it's getting boring for me? like, its rinse and repeat, shen xihe, wants do something, it goes off perfectly without a hitch and just happens over and over. and while thats not an issue if the novel was shorter, im really forcing myself to care. there is some character growth but only in romance and i actually dislike how, she's drawn a line on somethings but the ml still gets his way if he pouts enough. its just a struggle
So I wonder what they will do to make the show more interesting. I’m around chapter 600 something of the novel and it feels like a lot to get through. It doesn’t feel like there are any stakes in the novel. She constantly wins. Which is cool, if it was a shorter novel but it’s been like 600 + of the same cycle.
