Some of the lakorns during this era (like 2006-2015) were unbearable, and this is one of them. My biggest frustration wasn't the grandma, or the ML actually. It was the constant harrassment the FL had to go through and her double standards.
Give this a watch only if you like - (1) countless men lusting over the FL and attempting to rape her throughout (2) Damsel-in-distress and goody two-shoes FL who needs constant saving, and never takes agency of her own life (3) FL with double standards who has no issue with taking ML's help over and over, even to the extent of marrying him, but somehow sees herself as too low to be with him (4) ML with double standards who goes to watch a beauty pagent and then judges all the women participating in it, falls in love with the FL but does not warm up to her until she proves to be virginal and pure for him (5) FL cites her marriage as a reason to stop the villain from raping her because it is apparently against the law and morality, while the married villain continues to have numerous mistresses which is apparently ok (6) Bland uninteresting characters who are screaming, being violent or plain annoying and stupid - EACH ONE OF THEM, INCLUDING THE LEADS
Even though James and Bella had some sweet scenes in this, this was still such an unlikeable and frustrating lakorn. I am surprised by the high rating for this because it's one of the worst I have seen.
On the one hand, it was very realistic with the DV scenes, and depicting the complex emotions all the characters felt and were struggling with. I empathized with each one of them, despite the show not giving us a full picture of each of their backstories. Credit goes to the writing and acting here. On the other hand, it was also melodramatic and unrealistic in parts with the carelessness / frivolousness of the characters in the way they did not contact the police or met Sousuke countless times knowing damn well that he's abusive.. You don't walk into the lion's den and expect to come out unscathed. Another confusion comes from the title; I wonder why this was titled 'Last Friends' because this was clearly a story of different forms of love all these characters were untangled in, rather than friendship per se. The theme song 'Prisoner of Love' couldn't be any more apt. +1 for that unconventionally beautiful and wonderful ending. This writer really knows how to incorporate LGBTQ+ into a story be it this drama, 'Prism', or 'More Than Words'.
Prima facie, it checked all the boxes for an excellent drama, and yet it fell short of excellence. I don't know if I would recommend this, but a note - this is not for the faint hearted. It contains physical abuse and rape, which isn't one-off.
Special mention - Despite the seasoned cast, Nishikido Ryo really stood out as the obsessed and abusive ML. Goes to show that he's capable of doing much more than the tender, sweet, charming chocolate boy roles he has generally done.
Hmm.. if my memory serves me right, I don't think so. But I watched this back in 2016, so I could be wrong. Also, you can click on edit page > tags and genres, and you'll be able to see all the tags. If there is a love triangle, that tag will most likely be there.
I guess I've finally outgrown the shoujo manga genre that my comment is gonna be such a mood kill for those who loved this movie but can you imagine the outrage if the genders were reversed?
