I am yet to catch up on this show so I don't know how the acting was. I respect your opinion regarding the acting…
That reminds me, have you seen 'Fence'? https://kisskh.at/741833-fence I just watched it this week and I think it is very fitting to the point you made. It deals with a lot of issues arising from the US military base in Okinawa, and I was thinking about how it would face a lot of problems being released internationally due to the subject matter.
I can't speak for others and this is purely my opinion. As much as I would want more people to give J dramas a try, I am glad they don't try too hard to go international because that would mean they would lose the diversity and charm they have. They would not be able to tell a lot of hard-hitting stories that they are telling because it would have to align with the general moral compass that people have and be more politically sound.
And we have so many amazing fansubbers who are way better than subbing than the paid subbers so I've never felt the issue with accessing Japanese dramas and movies.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting over-acting given the cast but then you never know.. especially because most of the Japanese dramas made by Netflix have not been up to the usual standard of the local networks.
I'll start this today and will look out for the acting HAHA.
everything is great... plot, photography, editing, ... except the actingthis is just MY opinion... i feel like…
I am yet to catch up on this show so I don't know how the acting was. I respect your opinion regarding the acting in this drama. However, please do not generalise Japanese actors and cinema as people who overact and lack subtlety. You probably formed that opinion based on a few dramas or movies that you probably didn't like. Japan makes tons of shows with subtle, nuanced acting and has a diverse range of stories. They are famous for it. Perhaps, you should give some of the darker or more slice of life dramas / movies they make a try and you'll begin to have a very different opinion. Here are some recommendations that you can try: https://kisskh.at/list/LQJEl7R3
A simple, quiet and wonderful film with a profound and liberating lesson in "living" and how happiness is not…
It's such a beautiful message that this film gives about how the "perfect day" isn't one that is without any sadness or loneliness. These are emotions everyone experiences, but it is about what we take away from that day. It is about living in the moment and not fixating on all that people may see that you lack - case in point a companion, a good house, a good job that the ML would appear to lack from a capitalist perspective. But about what you ARE right now, and what you have the power to see, hear and experience every single day.
I went on a long walk after watching this film, and instead of listening to my playlist, I tried to listen to the sounds of the city, and observe the trees on these roads that I have walked on for decades, and it was such a calming, healing experience. I came back home, bathed and slept, and I woke up feeling much more relaxed and fresh.
This is a film that will stay with me for a long long time.
ME TOOI hope Netflix doesn't mess it upSomehow majority of the J-dramas made by these streaming services are subpar…
Oh man, what a bummer! I'm halfway through Gannibal and I really like it! Oh yes I completely agree that not all shows need multiple seasons. I always believe in concise and crisp-story telling rather than dragged out seasons just to capitalize on the profit from the former. I'm not a fan of Shogun getting a 2nd season either.
A simple, quiet and wonderful film with a profound and liberating lesson in "living" and how happiness is not necessarily something we need to obtain, rather it can be found in the little things around us everyday if we give ourselves a chance to step back, breathe, observe and soak in the experience that is life. Kudos to the masterful direction by Wim Wenders who lets the viewer feel Hirayama's world as he sees it, rich in colour, sound and experience, and the nuanced performance by Yakusho Koji who said so much while saying so little; this duo truly created magic together. Highly highly recommended for all :)
An extremely violent, gritty, and provocative film about a father piecing together his daughter's life. It's a simple plot but was elevated by an edgy direction and stellar performances by an A1 cast, especially Yakusho Koji and Komatsu Nana. If you enjoy Quentin Tarantino's films, you might enjoy this. Please watch with caution as this is graphic and disturbing.
Does anyone know any similar films with a heavy focus on someone not being quite who they were thought to be?
These are the ones I remember at the top of my head though there are a lot more - A Man (2022) Memories of Matsuko Traces of Sin Bump Off Lover Ito Kun A to E (the drama) Mukou No Hate Ichiko
