K-Drama An underrated gem about life, romance, and friendship
"What if I screw up?"
"But what you're supposed to do is to stay on the gas. Keep the wheel steady, point it to where you want to go. Eventually the car straightens itself out."
I am so emotional right now.
The writing / story:
The emotions this drama made me go through - the joy and carefreeness of youth, the yearning the leads had for each other, the friendship between all 5 of them and the way they supported each other through ups and downs, the heartbreak of not being able to communicate that they cared and loved each other, the regret, the guilt, the growing up and being better... what a journey I lived with these people.
Dramas with the marriage theme often miss the mark for me because they always centre around infidelity or one-sided narratives. I love how this drama didn't do that. Both the leads had their share of mistakes, and it's not like they didn't try to communicate. They did. But after a point, they became so muddled in their own unhappiness and perspective that they stopped empathizing and trying to understand each other. Despite it all, their yearning and love for each other was so beautifully embedded throughout - be it in their youth or in their 40s when the marriage was falling apart.
Their growth wasn't overnight, it was a slow process of letting go, to realising they didn't want to let go, to changing. I love how the change didn't focus on grand proposals or gestures; but it was about the little things that were forgotten - the jelly she loved, recognising the patterns of communicating, simply laughing together.
Special mention for the ending scene when they laugh and their boy just looks at them, confused. That's what family is - ease, comfort, laughter and communication.
The friends beautifully fit into their story and this drama in the way they were part of this journey. This wasn't just a romance drama. It was a drama about friendship and companionship. These characters were far from perfect, but I rooted for each one of them. To see them fight it out with each other and yet continuet to love and support each other through the good and the bad warmed my heart.
My criticism here - I didn't get the purpose of the younger version of Ke Jie coming back and meeting all these friends.
The acting:
The casting for the younger versions / older versions of the characters was so believable. There was clear thought and effort put into it.
I don't think I have anything detailed to say except that each one of them were so natural that I, not even for a minute, felt that anyone of them were acting. They were living, breathing people. Not to mention, each of them had tons of chemistry with each other.
The OST, visuals were beautiful too.
All in all, this drama deserves so much more love and acclaim.
