This might be unpopular opinion, but I find this drama great at first half, boring at the second half. Now stuck…
If that's the case then I will suggest you to read recap of episode 12-15 from a recapping site and directly watch episode 16, because I feel episode 16 is one of the best episode. Site I'll suggest is dramabeans.com
I know you will not give me a reply after going through my comment.
As a person one is entitled to their own opinion. And I always respect one's opinion and accept it. I am writing this not to contradict any of your opinion. This is to answer the questions or points you mentioned.
1)'I don’t understand all the ravings it got from people here.'
Well me too, I never expected it to get this much attention. I was surprised too. Although I loved it, I never thought it will be liked by these many people when I ended it. Even I never expected it to reach 8.5 because I believed there is so much to hate.
2)'The male lead is supposedly the highest paid actor - oh wow! What a joke. For him to earn so much for such shallow, robotic acting?'
The male lead 'Kim Soo-hyun' is surely the highest paid actor of South Korea at the moment according to all the major Kdrama and Kpop covering news sites like Soompi, South China Morning Post etc.
This is not the joke but it is the truth. Now when it comes to the payment I think you must be knowing that amount of payment is decided when a actor signs for the show even before the shooting starts. And as an actor he has proved himself very earlier in his career. As I'm a follower of him, I know what a great actor he is and not like your other Hallyu stars. He got praise for his acting in his very early stage of his career for his dramas like Giant and Moon Embracing the Sun and movie Secretly Greatly. Also he is the only Hallyu star among his peer group to have got a Baeksang Award (the most prestigious award for TV drama in South Korea) for the Best Actor (not popular, the best). I agree that his character portrayal in his most popular drama My Love From the Star didn't have a good impression of his acting because of his stoic character. So if you want to see him as an actor I will recommend you to watch Giant, Moon Embracing the Sun, Secretly Greatly, The Producers and Real. Warning is that story of all the dramas are not good, few are good, few are average and some below average (according to me) but good to see for some good and some phenomenal acting.
You can ignore upcoming paragraphs because this is to contradict you a little.
Now if you are watching him for the first time in this drama then as you didn't like the story and plot, which already reduces the half the effect of one's acting. As an actor surely this is not his best, I agree. But he was good. If you have watched the drama carefully then you must have got an idea of his character, someone who hides his emotions, someone who has a mask over his face. I feel you haven't watched each and every scene with proper understanding as you didn't like so many things.
3)'This is an over hyped and overrated kdrama and probably rated bec the leads are celebrities.'
My 2 cents: Oh don't tell me that this is over hyped and overrated kdrama because the LEADS ARE CELEBRITIES. Well I would have believed it if I didn't have a good comparison. The writer of this drama is a rookie writer and has not given a mega blockbuster yet. Same goes with the director. Now come to ML and FL Seo Yea-ji, if you compare the stardom of them together then it was like 4:1 before this drama. And now compare the stardom of the lead pairing of this drama with the lead pairing of the drama The King: Eternal Monarch, it will be in ratio of 1:4 respectively BEFORE BOTH THE DRAMA AIRED. After it has aired the things are different now.
This is quite evident that stardom alone cannot be a factor for the hype and rating.
"How Gang Tae and Sang Tae Living Without mother?"That's a plot hole?
I think there will be no use of thinking and trying to get answers because these past stories and memories in this drama were just like spices in the soup and not the main ingredient. And more over this was a character driven drama and not a plot driven drama. Every past story was shown according to one or two characters. There is no validity for what is the truth. For example according to Sang Tae's memories, the one who pushed him in the iced river was Gang Tae but according to Moon Young and Gang Tae this part was different. Similarily what happened to Moon Young's mother was according to MY's father who had tumor, so again there is validity. Also, Moon Young could have get the answer that how her mother survived but she didn't wanted to, so we didn't not got to know.
After your comment, I've been thinking about why I felt Kim Soo Hyun's Acting to be just average, and although…
There is always a reason behind what people say.
Thank you for taking out time to write such a long explanation. I must agree that in later few episodes I also felt like Oh Jung-se and Seo Ye-ji kind of outshined Kim Soo-hyun. But I disagree to agree that it was average, I felt as it was good and upto expectations whereas Oh Jung Se and Seo Ye-ji were great as they exceeded the expectations.
What makes his acting satisfying for me was the fact that his character was not flamboyant, outstand and meaty as of the other two co-stars. This was first time him working with two co-stars with extremely powerful roles and with great exceptional performance with equal time on screen. I think you wished more from his body actions and face, but I think his character was more of keeping inside and contemplative. And I don't think there is anything wrong in wishing more from an actor.
I think you must have watched his earlier works, like in other earlier works, here he was not the best performer. You expected him to be best among all three (or equal), that is what I will expect too but other two were really great especially veteran Oh Jung-se. You expected more from him, which I think made you dissatisfied. As I said there is nothing wrong in expecting. But here he was better from many of his earlier projects, which makes me satisfied as his personal development as an actor.
I will also like to mention this is not his best drama as an actor where he was the best, even I feel My Love from The Star gave a wrong impression of him as an actor because of his stoic character. But surely it was one of the best.
As an actor, his minor role in drama like Giant and considered average drama The Producers really shows his exemplary performances.
I just hope that he works in any future drama that meets your level of expectations as an actor.
Well, you seems to be the perfect person here whom I can believe to get an honest answer to my question.
What do you think about the portrayal of Moon Gang Tae by Kim Soo-hyun?
I feel that Seo Yea-ji and Oh Jung-se delivered there character phenomenally but Kim Soo-hyun also delivered his role quite good and impressive despite not being in a unique character.
I can understand your every aspect of review and respect that. It will keep bothering me if I will not ask this question, please let me know if you have time. Why Kim Soo-hyun's acting was just average? And especially this - How did his acting had a negative impact on drama?
Perfect review. I think you can remove spoiler tag, there is nothing in your review that can soil something in the drama. Those small bits and crumbs will attract more viewers.
I don’t understand why some reviews have this drama a high rating of 10, when they “dropped” it anyway?…
Maybe because there was a plot twist in episode 12-mid which many people didn't like. Many continued till end and few left it there considering episode 11 to be the last episode.
Yes it is overhyped and overrated, for sure, but in my eyes it deserves all the popularity not because the story was something really great or the writing was completely flawless.
Was it flawed? Yes at many places. Does it deserves popularity? Yes, because many will agree with me that this drama is indeed a 'human healing drama'. In my opinion: This drama is not for just binge watching for one great story or plot. This drama is for an experience that has to be felt and I will highly recommend this drama for those who want to see the world from a different eye. You'll understand me what I am babbling only when you will be able to feel. Or else don't watch it. It's not a cup of tea for everyone.
Hello IOTNBO family, I thought not to comment anymore but couldn't stop from. Here is reaction video by Koreans in which they also shares about popularity of IOTNBO in S Korea and they are also going to give some gifts (like The OST album, the Mang Tae and Dinosaur keyring and one the Books from Drama). Here is the link: https://youtu.be/PrVA7vJn2vg
What makes me his fan is not just his acting or passion for his work but also his real life personality. I always enjoy to see him offscreen. I still have a wish to watch him in a character very similar to what he is in real life.
I think I never commented this much on any thread, but I just can't stop myself from doing it. This is my last comment here. I love how here some people camped throughout the series that I can even remember their name (id). You all discussed all sorts of things sometimes to much in the topic and sometimes of the topic. LOL. I enjoyed reading your comments.
You all are too much serious for rating, and I know you will be hurt when (if) ratings go down.
There are chances that rating will go down as more number of people will watch the show. Everyone have a different opinion and a different taste and will rate in that way only.
I just want to say to you all IOTNBO family that you all should not be so much caring about ratings. Ratings are mere numbers which tell popular opinion and acceptance.
This is successful drama because it proved itself. I'm just saying successful not extraordinarily successful. Mind it!!

2-This drama became 5th highest rated drama on cable television of year 2020. (data of - 10 August 2020)

4- This became the first Kdrama on Netflix to trend on number 1 spot in 9 countries at the same time.
5- It trended on Twitter after episode 9 aired, reaching number one spot 3-4 times during its run from episode 10-16 proving its mass popularity worldwide.

7- It also topped CPI during its run.
8- This drama gave domestic and worldwide exposure and appreciation to Seo Ye-ji's acting who was underrated.
9- This drama became the part of 3rd hallyu wave.
These are some facts just to prove that it was a successful drama in a decent manner.
I have written this because I was dipped into this drama completely from last 2-3 days. I surfed internet and found this and shared just to come out in my real life from this reel life with complete satisfaction. I know it will take some time for me to come out of this. I'll come but will never forget this.
I loved the way, this drama emphasized on relationship of Mun Young and Gang Tae more than the relationship of Mun Young and Sang Tae from episode 1-11 and then emphasized more on relationship of Mun Young and Sang Tae from 11-16, with equal emphasis on relationship between Sang Tae and Gang Tae throughout the series. Making the perfect trio.
