My jumble of thoughts on “Four Hands, Two Sonatas”
Honestly, I don’t even know where to start. Watching this drama was an emotional roller-coaster ride🫠 I usually don’t have the endurance to watch angsty dramas, and if it wasn’t for Kang Pi-o and Choi Jeong-yo, I probably wouldn’t have tolerated it. But their friendship brought such a love and warmth to the screen that I couldn’t help but root for them. Despite all the hardships both characters had to go through, and despite all the other characters I could barely stand…
In the end, this is a drama is about loving, healing, and forgiving. It portrays what greed can destroy, how revenge and jealousy can lead to self-destruction, but also how music can touch the soul, how forgiving can heal you, and how a deep and strong bond between two people can survive even the most painful moments.
The cast and crew did such an incredible job at bringing this drama to life. The cinematography was great, the soundtrack equally amazing. I’ve been listening to “Nemesis” on repeat 🎶 And Lee Jun-Young, EXCUSE ME SIR? This guy deserves an Oscar. And the chemistry between him and Song Kang was off the charts. Also Yoon Se Ah, the actress who played Kang Pi-o’s mother… That scene where she screamed at her father. Phew.
There are a few things that really triggered me about this drama though. As I already mentioned, it had me at the edge of my seat almost every episode. I really disliked most of the characters, which was probably the whole point, considering that almost all the adults in their life let Kang Pi-o and Choi Jeong-yo down in pursuit of their own goals.
One thing I also didn’t understand was the relationship between Hong Jae-in and Kang Pi-o. It felt forced and unnatural. But both of them acknowledged that at some point, and I was so relieved they didn’t get back together in the last episode. That made me like the drama a bit more. In general, I kind of liked how they wrapped it up in the last two episodes. I feel like I have closure with most of the characters now. I would’ve merely wished to see more of Kang Pi-o and Choi Jeong-yo.
Which brings me to the last point I want to address. Choi Jeong-yo and Kang Pi-o’s relationship. I don’t want to label it at all. I merely want to say that whatever both of them had- it was a very deep connection. And their love for each other and for music ultimately prevailed. That’s what this drama centres around and that’s why I am so thankful I watched it till the end. Because it showed that love can outlast hatred, and that a connection like the one Kang Pi-o and Choi Jeong-yo have is something very special.
I feel like the warmth of their relationship and their music will stay with me for a while longer.
