It's a detective show set in historical China (a real historical period rather than just Olden Times like a lot of historical dramas). They start off solving crimes and (of course) it escalates into stopping a plot to assassinate the Emperor, and in the process assemble a large and loving found family. It's funny, touching, heartwarming. Honestly it's one of the best c-dramas I've watched, and I'd recommend it to nearly anyone.
