The novel is very good in a different way, there are A LOT of major things changed in the series to suit censorship.…
I just read about ten chapters. It definitely is funnier, and the setup seems a lot clearer. I'm not sure if I'll continue to read though. How does this author, Xi Zixu, compare to someone like Meatbun, or Priest, or Tang Jiu Qing? It looks a bit lighter so far.
Has anyone read the novel? Is it worth it? There are so many odd things in this show. I have eight episodes left. I'm intrigued, but don't really feel it that much. So many things are explained five minutes after they become obvious and then other things are never really explained. There's a strange quality to it i like. And the imagery is often arresting, but the emotion seems off. It's not really clicking. I wonder if the book would make things clearer.
I'm on episode 17. I think the emperor's character is a bit of a weak spot. It seems like a parody but not. The tone feels off.. Maybe it'll make more sense in time..
This is one of the funniest shows I've seen. I keep going back to watch that dance scene at the end over and over. I definitely prefer he end up with the shifu, though having both BL and BG was great. Also their outrage over the restaurant only serving vegetarian was hilarious. The first three or four three episodes I did not like at all. So stick with it, it takes some getting used to. And the shifu's character was not initially appealing but she becomes fantastic at the end, especially after her big fight scene, in which she breaks her bamboo stick and just reduces her opponent to tears in how unserious she's being. Also, I'm still confused about the corn cob. It's so ridiculous i feel I must be missing some cultural reference. There's something almost oddly creepy about it. And I disagree totally with people say there's no chemistry between the male and female lead. They're connected by both being to most ironical and outside the drama. While there might be sincerity within the BL story; sincerity is not the tone of the story at all, so there is a deeper connection between the male and female as opposed to the two males.
But I don't get it, is her name actually Priest in China?
