I dislike historical dramas a lot. English movies and tv programs that are similar to this wouldn't even get a second of my time. But I love this drama so much. That's the greatest reason for me to really respect what they have done with this production.

He has spent a lot of time in China and the surrounding countries because of filming too so he probably picked up on some things. It's always fun to see people super suprised when he speaks gibberish XD

Just throwing a little info in here, it probably wasn't because they couldn't get a chinese person to play the role, but instead pronouncing korean words with a chinese accent is a thing that comedians do, like Lee Soo Geun.
