I just rewatched the first 3 episodes with a friend and we both felt the second brother in law was immature but…
Hello! All opinions are valid and dramas like these are always subjective. I agree with other viewers that the ML are flawed and don't always treat their wives as well as they should. It hasn't stopped me from enjoying the drama myself, but I can understand where all the debate and disappointment comes from.
From what I can remember, the second brother-in-law is very much spoilt and is easily misled, but it is also true that he didn't respect his wife's feelings for him or change his behaviour when he knew his actions caused her distress. It took her scheming before he changed his ways and even then, she should not have to go to such lengths for her husband to begin treating her well. As for " He did not want a concubine" I would have to disagree with you here. He did in fact want a concubine and would her origins were revealed, he was berated by his father for being careless. If it wasn't his idea, then his father would have no reason to be angry with him. Also, in regards to the sister biting stones to stop her jealousy, she did so because jealousy is considered a vice for women (we even see Chai An lecturing her for it...only later to admit he was wrong to his own wife and ready to apologize). So without any other way to vent her pain and frustration, she did so internally, which is heartbreaking really. Even more so to realize that the source of her pain is her husband's disregard for her. I don't see her self-harm as an exaggeration.
And as for your point about the first husband, you are referencing a different scene/episode. Later on in their story, it is true that he tried to get her to divorce him (for his own reasons), but what I mentioned in my post was his poor treatment of her in the beginning when they were just married. The way he left her on her wedding night, ignored her presence and stayed away from home. He did all that (as he states himself to Chai An) was because they switched brides and "insulted" him. It was bad enough that his own mother noticed and condemned him. But her own sisters had to reach out to their husbands to intervene (hence the meeting with Chai An).
The drama is funny, and like I mentioned before I really like it. I just finished the most recent episodes today and enjoy it very much. That being said, I will also acknowledge that the ML's aren't perfect and I can't defend them when they do make mistakes. Currently we are at the last sister's love story, and I'm sure you'd agree that he has deliberately gone out of his way to harm the sisters. Nevertheless, these ML are not entirely defined by their wrongdoings, and part of the appeal of the story is to see how they rectify their mistakes.
I disagree with your perception of the ML, especially the 2nd and the 1st brother-in-law.
The 2nd ML was known to entertain other woman while married to his wife. His behaviour caused her so much distress that she started to self-harm to cope. His actions caused her so much shame that she was unable to face her sisters and mother when they arrived at her door, despite how tightly knit their family unit is. Truthfully, she had no chance from the start. Their society has been structured to be difficult for women, especially married women. Her "jealousy" is constructed as a flaw that she must overcome rather than justified indignation towards her husband's unfaithfulness. In fact, having multiple wives is normalized. The 2nd ML even considered taking a concubine (despite it being a trick set up by the Li sisters) and would have gone through with it if certain events didn't play out. Imho, he would not only be cheating on his wife, but well within his "rights" to do so.
As for the 1st brother-in-law, he was known to be vindictive and petty. He showed that to us in the way he treated his wife. He punished her and mistreated her for some time, to a degree where her sisters started complaining to their husbands over his behaviour. Even his own mother started to reprimand him. It wasn't until later that he tried to make "amends" , indicating that he was wrong and aware of it.
And don't even get me started on the last brother-in-law who tried to force two sisters into an unwilling marriage and eventually succeeded with one. I love this show despite its flaws and rank it pretty high, but I will also be honest and not mislead others because I view the show so favourably. Despite being very entertaining, it has its flaws. And the ML's are anything but perfect, and do in fact harm the sisters in some way or form (whether deliberately or indirectly).
