Sorry, it takes 20+ episodes for the story to get going. But after that, it's totally worth it
I think the main characters was the first thing that kept me watching more. The characters are interesting and the actors behind them are amazing! This applies to both the good guys and the "bad" guys. New characters are introduced as the series goes on and they are all interesting in their own way.
The story in the beginning was partly a bit hard to follow as there are quite many side plots going on, but once you get to the episode 20 it focuses mainly on the main plot. The beginning episodes are like foundation for main plot coming later on. I like how to show is mainly based on "mind games", not so much on the action (it's often too "out of this world" with all the flying etc.). The discussions and conversations in the show are all well written.
Another thing that stood out to me from the beginning was that the show has a bit more "realistic" feel to it. What I mean is that I am not a big fan of fantasy genre and many other chinese historical series have more fantasy elements (even what it comes to costumes and hair design). So this was more to my taste in that aspect as well. There are more "flying" action scenes and CGI in the beginning of the show, I think it becomes better/less later on.
There are many other things that are good in the show, but I tried to think what makes this show better than the others, and these were the things that first came to my mind :) I know that not every show is for everyone, but for me this is the best (I'm quite picky lol)
Watching Nirvana in Fire again is like coming back home, just like Lin Shu who has finally returned home and sees all the familiar places and people from the past.
Do you mean the first male lead? I would say Ji Chang Wook, but Joo Jin Mo plays a big part as well. The line between the first and the second male lead isn't as clear as in most dramas.
My bf and I tried this show 4 times, I can't even get past half of the first episode. ._." No eye candy, slow…
I tried the first episode a couple of times, even fell as sleep once lol, BUT I'm glad I overcame the first episode because it became my all time favorite drama! ^-^
I haven't watched this drama....just reading through comments to see if I should. I'm fine with long historical…
It gets really interesting at around ep 20, but I also liked the 20 first episodes. Otherwise I would have never reached ep 20.. :D The first couple of episodes can be a bit hard to follow though, but once you get to know the characters it's easier to follow. Hope you like it :)

Have you tried Nirvana in Fire? I haven't found any other Chinese historical drama that I like (and which I didn't drop), but I really really like Nirvana in Fire! And don't let the beginning scare you, it gets better ;)
