I just finished episode 3 and i don’t know, like, i love a lot of things about this drama but it’s so bland…
I felt the same way about Something in the Rain and One Spring Night. I kept waiting for them to ramp up and get to a more captivating pace, but they never did (for me) and I think this director's style is just not right for me but it seems many people love it.
Realistic noona romance and slice of life (which I love) actors that I love in all their other work.... but then there's a lot of time on empty spaces, lingering shots with no dialogue, characters walking, or taking a drink, side characters doing boring stuff... It ends up feeling way too slow for my preference.
This felt so similar to those two other shows, I had to come back and check if it was the same director or writer and sure enough! There's a pattern and I don't think it's right for me either.
Totally agree with the review that said Jo Jung Suk carried the show. He was the reason I kept watching and I would love to see him play a king in a based-on-real-people historical drama. He might be my favorite portrayal of a king in a historical drama even among the historical dramas I have rated much higher than this. His performance was the first time I could really feel how a king could be enchanting and terrifying in the same moment. He was so good. Unfortunately almost everything else about this drama was mostly forgettable, but he was incredible.
most of the real life stories end the way their story has ended. many would say the ending is sad but to me it…
I agree. I was their age in the 90s and everything about this was so authentic right down to the ending. I am also married to a different person than I dated in my early 20s, but we had an amicable break up and are still friends and share the same social group, so very relatable ending as an older person who had a healthy relationship that wasn't my forever relationship I guess. It was very real and I think handled very well.
This has to be the most ridiculous comment I've read on this site haha. Lee Se Young has been wonderful in many roles - she was the main reason I decided to start watching this one.
Comparing the two male lead actors. If I were in Dalmi’s shoes, I would choose Dosan. Why? Because his love…
I get Second Lead Syndrome a lot, but did not in this case - mostly because I never felt like HJP was romantically attracted to Dalmi the way Dosan was from the moment he saw her and got a glimpse of her letters. The vibe I got from HJP was one of a person who grew up desperately wanting to be part of a family. His feelings for Dalmi were mixed up with desires to be part of her family and to receive affections of a family as well as being able to protect them. HJP is an assertive person but he had three years to take a shot at a relationship with Dalmi and didn't "invest" in that opportunity. He did however allow himself to become comfortable in that family. No question, Dalmi was absolutely precious to him and I loved him and wanted him to find the warmth of a family that he never had, but tbh, it felt like a big brother/little sister situation the whole time.
as a person with bpd, I see a lot of myself in Woo Yeon. that's why I get her.
Having had a relationship with someone with NPD (narcissistic personality disorder) their whole relationship is so hard to watch. They don't need romance, they need therapy.
Would like to emotionally prep myself here... does this drama come with a supply of onion chopping ninjas? (Aka, will I cry a lot? I tend to get pretty emotionally involved in stories.)
