I saw a small clip on YouTube and I really liked the chemistry, personality and acting of Lou Bin and Dai Xi. Nine episodes in and that is still all I like. Other than them , Lina and the one assistant, everyone else basically lacks human decency. He Sai was insufferable to watch for me. I’m not sure if it was supposed to be comic relief but his personality was like nails on a chalkboard. His whole character is just “look at me, look how amazing I am, why is no one looking” then insert tantrum. On top of that, he is nosy, gossipy and manipulative. Every time he is on screen, it’s like watching a toddler have a meltdown in the store after his parents tell him no, it’s not entertaining… just uncomfortable to watch.
Mei Fan gives me the ick. Boyfriends like him are part of the reason the B4 movement exists. He was such a crappy boyfriend that I couldn’t even tell they were dating till several episodes in and he specifically said it. Before that I just thought he was a crappy friend. Dai Xi is so talented and capable and yet all he does is demean and insult her. It is very clear he doesn’t want her to shine at all and would rather her have stayed a barista because his fragile ego can’t tolerate her succeeding or having any sort of opinions without lashing out at her. I tried to stick it out till he gets dumped but I gave up.
The final annoyance was Lou Bin’s ex. She was entitled and smug. She seems amused by how her appearance obviously causes stress and hurt to Lou Bin, yet still expects favors. Also, what kind of married woman breaks into another man’s house in the middle of the night?
These were just the most offensive characters to me. Perhaps if there was a better plot and character development to improve on the flaws, it would have been more enjoyable to watch. There doesn’t quite seem to be any specific goal or direction for the series, almost like it should be more episodic… like CSI or Law and Order. However, the show ultimately fails at this because the cases are almost like an afterthought. A case appears, Dan Xi or Lou Bin spits out the answer and some legal jargon and then at the end of the episode we sometimes get a snippet of the trial and the victory. There is nothing for the viewer to look forward to or try to hypothesize about the potential outcomes. There is no mystery or tension.
All in all Lou Bin and Dai Xi were the only redemption for the series but it wasn’t enough to carry the show for even a quarter of the 42 episodes.
