I think there are definitely GMMTV directors and screenwriters who care about the stories they're telling, but I think you're right about GMMTV's objectives and as a result creatives get shafted by needing to hit certain goals to make "moments" trend. Year after year, their shows get more formulaic. For this one in particular, I thought given the director's past works, she might actually get to take some risks. But it may have actually been to her detriment that this was a passion project for her; I don't think she could see the final product as an impartial viewer. (I've also seen a theory that this was K-pop fanfiction and... I believe it.)

For sure, you'll see that in Y ships/fandoms. If they'd wanted to criticize that, it would've been great if they'd made a show about that instead of transposing it onto T-pop (or trying to make it a stand-in for K-pop), especially given that this will serve as a first T-pop introduction to the heavily international BL fanbase.
