My Drama Checklist: What Keeps Me Watching
Life’s too short for subpar dramas. If I manage to make it to the end of a series, it earned its screen time—and at least a 5-star rating. I don’t do long-winded reviews, but here’s my personal checklist for what makes a drama worth watching. If a show fails this 4-point test, it’s getting ghosted and buried in my Drama Graveyard. 🪦
1. Story That Sticks
A good premise might get me to hit play on episode one, but solid storytelling propels me to the next episode. The plot should unravel with intention while supported by a sequence of scenes that serve a purpose along with well-contrived conflict that leads to a satisfying resolution. It’s not just what happens that counts, but how and why it happens.
2. Characters That Live
I want characters who feel real—brought to life by sensible screenwriting and the charismatic actors who get their roles. Show me the backstory, depth and believable growth. And if we're talking rom-coms: chemistry is non-negotiable. I won't stand for leads who look like they can’t stand each other.
3. Pacing That Works
Every show needs to earn its runtime. It’s not about the episode count; it’s about how the story unfolds. If the plot needs time to breathe and still keeps me hooked, I’m all in—even for a 50-episode saga. But if the story drags, meanders, or fills space with pointless fluff and filler episodes, I’m hitting pause for good.
4. Production That Delivers
Great dramas aren’t always big-budget, but they do make the most of what they’ve got. Smart direction, clean editing, fabulous fashion and props, OST that hits just right—it all matters. A well produced drama is the icing on the cake.
The Last Straw
Some dramas defy logic. Maybe they’re a hot mess, but I need to see what happens next. Or maybe there’s a magnetic lead, an addictive soundtrack, or a totally unhinged plot twist I can’t stop thinking about. Whatever it is, that spark keeps me glued to the screen—even when I know better.
