Wu Lei plays Xiao Chuang, who at first seems like a pretty cheesy (but likeable!) character. This guy deliberately and unashamedly be dropping some mad corny lines outta nowhere like he is some kinda hero in a movie, pretending to be cool. The funny thing is that he actually can be really cool when he's not actively "trying" to be. He is 100% extroverted and a Big (capital B!) risk-taker who always appears to be full of confidence and arrogance, but there is more to him than meets the eye. 😭
Hou Minghao plays his (original) best bro, Pei Qing Hua. An occasionally sarcastic but mostly serious introvert, who is never afraid to call out his best friend when he needs to. He is rigid and logical while Xiao Chuang is free and emotional.
There is a good contrast between their personalities and beliefs, which keeps their interactions interesting and believable. Their friendship is super heartwarming. (I still can't get over Pei Qing Hua's letter!)
Both of them start with lots of room for character development. Over the years, you get to see them change and grow in a few areas, and stay the same in other areas... (I'm looking at you Xiao Chuang, pls 😩)
There are some scenes I just can't forget. If you allow yourself to become invested in the characters, I would say that the pay-off is absolutely worth it imo—despite the open ending.
Which brings me to my only complaint: it ends on a cliffhanger, the story is not finished at all!
So where is season 2????? I saw the teaser/preview, pls tencent I need it bad.
Otherwise I'm gonna have to learn Chinese and read the novel 😭
I hope so too~
But I'm still looking forward to it! Never seen Zhao Jinmai before, but she looks really cute! And I can't wait to see Wu Lei in this role.
Thanks for the info~
Not gonna read the rest, I'd rather watch it. But I have a feeling that FL will fall for ML too quickly, can anyone who's read the novel tell me if I'm right?
This is just my personal opinion/interpretation.
At the beginning of the movie, Zheng Yuxing is called out many times for being pathetic, childish, and undignified because he can't let go of Chen Chen. He knows that it's not true, because he's in on the white lie, but he can't help but take every word to heart. He tries to ignore it, but it still hurts because deep down he realises that he really is pathetic, childish, and undignified. Not because he can't let go of (his fake ex) Chen Chen, but because he can't let go of (his real ex) Ming.
At the end of the movie, when Chen Chen confesses, Zheng Yuxing kisses her in order to validate her feelings—even though he can't reciprocate them. He doesn't run from it or make excuses like he did before. It's the exact opposite of what Ming does to him, cruelly cutting him off completely, because Ming no longer feels the same way.
When Zheng Yuxing tells Chen Chen that he wishes that he could like her back, Chen Chen says that maybe they should both learn to accept that the person you like might not like you back. She seems heartbroken, but relieved that they could both be honest with their feelings. Her wish has come true; the two of them have become braver and more honest with themselves, even if it hurts.
In the last scenes, three years later, Chen Chen revisits the Upcoming music festival to see Zheng Yuxing perform as a DJ. She looks up at the board the same way he did back then, but unlike Zheng Yuxing, she wears a small smile and an aura of contentment. During his performance, she doesn't stand near the front; she doesn't need him to see her—it mirrors Zheng Yuxing when he decided not to confront Ming. Back then, instead of going to the front, he stayed back and resigned himself to let go—trying hard to accept the fact that their relationship was over.
I feel like Chen Chen's attitude and overall vibe in the final scenes, from looking up at the board to watching Zheng Yuxing perform, shows that she knows that their relationship will never be anything more than platonic. And that's fine, she has clearly made peace with it at this point. But she still loves him, and so she repeats the trip from three years ago as a sort of ritual to officially mark the end and let him go. It's the same thing she witnessed Zheng Yuxing do, which resulted in him finally being able to move on from Ming.
The last lines about "when the future arrives" makes me think that they are still in contact, maybe Zheng Yuxing even invited her there. Or maybe he didn't. Whatever the case might be, I like to believe that they still share that strong bond of friendship they forged back then, even if they are apart or not "together."
I know it's extremely unlikely, but I would love to see a sequel sooooo badly! (with Ming as an actual main character)
