Could you give your take on why Park Yeong Ran (Bu Sang Gil's wife) said she'd live with him until the end, instead…
At first I thought it was stubbornness that made her stay, like holding on until the end just for that small possibility that she wasn’t 100% mistaken in marrying Bu Sang Gil.
But after a while, I realized that maybe that was her own type of revenge in a way I guess. Obviously, she was still suffering from her situation but it’s way different from the beginning where he used to beat her up.
This is no ordinary “staying for the children” trope. I think she was staying with him until the end to deprive him of another shot at life by remarrying or enjoying bachelor life. It was like “I’m miserable anyway, so I’ll make you miserable too”.
I mean with that logic, it’s like she’s totally lost any hope of a better life, which is just darn tragic. Also, not all women in their redemption arc have to become domineering or vengeful to be considered “strong”.
Yeong Ran, despite not being as energetic as Ae-Sun, is a strong woman who defied the cards given to her but still remained true to her values (she never cheated back nor abused her stepsons).
We also have to consider her situation. She married young (probably to secure a comfortable life, just like how Ae-sun once almosy did) and she didn’t have any source of income, even hanyeos barely get by. In addition, her husband’s family controlled the island, like how if it weren’t for Ae-sun’s grandma buying them a boat, they were definitely a lost cause unless they luckily find some form of livelihood in another village/city. We don’t even see Yeong Ran’s maiden family or know if she had one.
It’s sad how Yeong Ran probably settled with her life, but she was no doormat and definitely fought back in her own way (going dancing & voting for Ae-sun). Don’t be fooled by her calm demeanor, Yeong Ran is not weak.
Also, may a man like Bu Sang Gil never find me because that man is a nightmare!! 🥹
I was 50/50 before but now i will def watch because of Kim Seon Ho
As someone who wasn’t even a fan of Kim Seon Ho in the first place, I was amazed in those few scenes he had. From total lack of interest to his “rumored” cameo, I’m losing sleep over volume 4. I can’t wait for Friday 😭 Parkcasso definitely won’t disappoint 🤩
Yeah! The way she look down on others. That look in her eyes and posture are something we won't forget. Serve…
The actress died in real life??? Omg I didn’t know that. I just looked it up and according to news sites, she died of cancer. Gosh she definitely gave her all to that character. As much as I hated her character even if I gave her the benefit of the doubt at first, I applaud the actress for her performance. At first, her character was obviously hiding her disdain in the name of “class” but at that pivotal scene where all hell broke lose, she really outed that her sense of class was really just pure snobbery, prejudice, and ignorance.
I can’t stop thinking about that first in-laws meeting where an elderly gwan-sik used two hands to shake hands so his callouses won’t be as noticeable. That scene really broke my heart. No one commented about it out loud at that moment but Yeong Beom’s mother mentioned it again a few episodes later condescendingly calling it a “laborer’s hands” 😣 that really pissed me off! there is no shame in hard & honorable work. Geummyeong’s parents really gave it their all and raised her properly to the point that she won’t even get more than necessary from the jar full of bills nor be bribed by Jenny’s mom. Yeong Beom’s mother really deserved her lonely and miserable end. Karma got to her and she brought it all on herself.
If the show ends with ae sun and gwan sik dying I will riot
Based on episode 1 context clues, gwan-sik probably died first before ae-sun. Also, now that we’re nearing the end, geummeyong’s voice over sounds more and more like ae-sun’s eulogy but I really hope not 😣
The villains are that hostel couple stealing "foreign" people's belongings yet their business is still operatingAnd…
Exactly, when we talk about “villains” in dramas, they’re people who target the main leads directly or an ever-present evil character that moves the entire plot forward. Those hostel people and jennie’s mom were bad people. Sure they’re minor antagonist for an episode or two, but not THE villains of the drama. They’re awful people who do awful things, and they just happened to cross paths with the main leads. I even thought at first that the villains were gwan-sik’s mom and grandmother but they weren’t villains. They were also just victims and perpetrators of a toxic cycle that stems from poverty and patriarchy I guess. I think deep inside, they wanted to have someone treat them, love them, and respect them unconditionally like how Gwan-sik does to Ae-sun
I can’t even feel bad for Bu Sang Gil when he tried to reconnect with his own daughter after seeing Gwan-Sik & Geummyeong after their boat ride and seeing their close father-daughter relationship. I mean Sang Gil was never a good father nor husband. He made his bed & now he’s lying in it. Nobody in his family loves or respects him. His own biological sons prefer their stepmother over him. Just bad decisions after bad decisions (cheating, bribery, snobbery, bullying) and now people in his life is barely tolerating his existence (his own wife asking him not too come home for dinner often since it was bothersome). This drama really has no villains except life but the bad people really do get their own karma in the end
I love how ksh’s character Cheong Seop didn’t stop running in the end. I mean sure it was a funny scene when he got tangled with the fangirls but hey, he did not stop chasing after Geummyeong’s bus even just after a split second of seeing her. That says a LOT 🤭
Why would the daughter marry someone who looks exactly like her dad? Doesn’t make sense!
Exactly!! Idk what op was thinking with her comment. Instead, it’s nice if Park Bo Gum came back as a grandson who took care of Ae Sun in her old age, since we know Gwan-sik probably died before her based on episode 1
Does anybody know about Kim Seon Ho's character or is it still a mystery? Is He the one who was sticking the poster???
He’s the one bowing in the poster & it’s very likely that he’s the husband. I mean it won’t make any sense if they suddenly add another random guy just for a gotcha! moment
I should’ve known by now but still fell for it, f**k you netflix 😫
I was heartbroken too when they broke up (while still being in love) but 100% supportive of Geummyeong when she said that while she loves him, she loves herself too which is why she won’t settle for in-laws like that. I mean Yeongbeom wasn’t entirely a pushover by his mom but he definitely hesistated a lot and needed a push most of the time, especially that restaurant scene where Gwan-sik kept eyeing Yeongbeom to make a move
What's Kim seon ho role??Is he geum myeong husband??
Yes, the chances of him being the husband is VERY high. I hope they show parallels of him and Gwan-sik, showing that seeing her father treat her mother made Geummyeong not settle for anything less
I felt sad throughout the drama but episode 12 made me cry like waterfalls 😭, I mean all those offscreen deaths finally got acknowledged, especially that hanyeo auntie Chung-Soo… the ones alive really does keep living. Gosh I feel like I’ll breakdown if they show Gwan-Sik dying before Ae-sun since he wasn’t shown in episode 1 time jump 😣🫠
