the question is whether it made sense to hold pinkies yet or not. Director wanted hand brush to show both of them affected. Pinky on the other hand is pretty much acknowledgement of romantic attraction towards the other person.
So, going back to "just friends" after pinky would not make sense.
This is exactly what the other guys asked Gemini Fourth when they revealed thsi was improvised. The question was - "Pinky is pretty much confirmation and acknowledgement of you liking each other" ... to which Gemini nodded..
