I just figured it was a form of escapism. She can't seem to connect with her peers (Ep 5.2), who think she's weird due to her "eccentric" interests, so she is on the lookout for aliens who will understand her and be her friends (Ep 3.3).
But sure, autism can be an alternative explanation for her behavior too.

As a general rule of thumb, I've accepted that adaptations are worse than their source material. So, whenever possible, I try to read the source instead. Unfortunately, it's hard to get hold of an English translation for this novel.
