I liked this series quite a bit. It's one of those that combine comedy with drama, and does it well. Kobayashi Satomi is one of my favorite Japanese actresses, and she does not disappoint here. The series is only 9 episodes, which I found to be just the right number. They kept the ending under wraps very well...I believe they ended it the proper way, and up until the end, I was never sure about how it was going to turn out. Well worth watching for me.

This show is great, I really do not understand why there were not more seasons. I'm a huge fan of the original Japanese series and specials. and this ranks right up there with them. Highly recommend.

This is a remake of the 1954 classic of the same name, and it's a good one. The sets, scenery, and actors/actresses were all great. It is dramatic at times, as it should be, as that's the type of story it is. The film covers a span of roughly 20 years, encompassing pre-war through post-war period of the 1920s-1940s Japan. If you've seen the original, definitely watch this one also. If you've seen neither, definitely watch both.

On Nakamura Atsuo Apr 11, 2024
Atsuo Nakamura plays a major role as a military interpreter in one of my all-time favorite films, The Highest Honor (1982). It's a co-production of Japan and Australia, which is why it's not listed on kisskh, I suppose. The film is superb, as is Mr Nakamura's performance.

Great, great, great. I enjoyed it from the beginning, because I thought it was silly and fun...and it definitely lives up to its name of "pretty girls." The more I watched it, I realized that...yes, it is a little silly...and yes, it is fun...but beyond that, there is also a lot of meaning to this story. A whole lot of lessons we would all do well to learn, presented in a very entertaining and enjoyable way. 10 out of 10.

Really enjoyed this movie! It's shot in black and white, and that's for the better, as the cinematography is beautiful. The story takes place in the confines of a tourist hotel and while slow-moving, for me the pace is just right. The ending is one I didn't see coming and really puts the movie in perspective, so I won't put any spoilers here. If you like films where the emphasis is on the characters and the story, not on action, this is a good one.

Really enjoyed it. Wish i could go back to 1995, too, lol. I found the movie to be really nice, a good representation of its genre.

On The Homely of Sister Dec 28, 2023
Really enjoyed this movie. Great sets and costumes, and a nice story about the sacrifices a person will make for her family and the lengths necessary to right a wrong. I am surely missing something in the translation of the title to English, as the word "homely" in this context would seem to mean unattractive...and the sisters are definitely NOT unattractive. Well worth watching.

I will admit I didn't really understand the film, certainly not enough to review it. Perhaps it is simply one of those films that seeks to capture the normal, non-exciting lives of normal, non-exciting people in a normal non-exciting place. Slow moving, and the interactions of the townspeople are interesting at times. While I didn't completely understand it, I did enjoy it.

I really, really like these types of old movies, and this is a good one. Sure, it fits some expected molds, but nothing wrong with that...such molds have remained popular for a century now for a reason. Definitely recommend.
