Yes, please do give it another try. It's totally worth it. If you enjoyed an edit of the 12 gods, you'll love watching their part too. They appear for a short time, but the impact they leave is huge.

If you're not a big fan of ML, I can assure you that by the end of the drama, you'll have a new found appreciation for him. The makeup is indeed a bit heavy, but you'll get used to it. It goes with the character anyway and the eyeliner he sports has a fandom of it's own.
I think there is some misunderstanding going on here regarding what dunhuang is or isn’t. It is a city where there are multiple caves containing art/artefacts, manuscripts etc, over the span of 1000 years. From what I understood, the cave paintings/murals were drawn in a specific style which is now called dunhuang art style.
There are countless materials available which explains the timeline and history of the caves and well researched documentaries are available. I think it is wise to check out these in order to have a better idea regarding what it is in the first place.
