I haven't watched this but peeked at the last (ep. 13) episode. Why isn't Xu Chen listed before Lu Yan? is that significant or an error?Are they fooling the viewers, too? Not many comments here. Very good point. Was she aware of that or will the revelation come as a shock to the Mother? If the Pei Mansion was that close, did she marry him to dig up dirt on the next door Pei Family and stumbled on to the fact that her husband was the lost son. One problem is that save for Xiwen, no one in the Zhuang family looks or acts like a worthy uber villain. If the Zhuang family is executed then their property should be seized. Hanyan should be left with nothing. If she goes into the Fu mansion, then a powerful enemy of Fu Yunxi should be the next villain.

I think that Ruan family's massacre has a hand in Xiwen's emnity towards the Pei family including her husband.

I think that it's too soon for the whole Family to die. Foolish but not fatally foolish.

Yes Magistrate Han Muzhi and she loves then likes him, but bing an ex-courtesan made a marriage with her daunting. Think Edward the VII and Miss Wallace Simpson. He gave up the Crown for her. And Menglin's Father was going to beat him to death for saying that he would only marry Luo Shu. Beat him to death!! Nearly did it, too. The second triangle was with the evil Qin Yi. Childhood friend that was no friend at all.

I think that the theme for the drama, for the main characters as well as the murder mysteries is love. Love that you cannot have. When the one you love has another in his or her heart. Only two couples have a happy ending. One was the sister and her lover that faces an uncertain future as he doesn't have much money and they may struggle to maintain her lifestyle. Han and Liu Wan's future is left open at the end. Qin Yi wanted to have Luo Shu on his terms, as twisted as it was. It was a lose lose situation. Were she to really become subservient to him, then the spark that made her desirable would be gone.
Governor Qi was exiled 8,000 li which in the past was about a third of a mile per li. So that would be about 2,666 miles away to the West. 2 to 6 months by foot and about 10 to 20 days by horseback. Lian Shu says that Menglin constantly worries about him. So he is still alive. With his property confiscated is everyone in the Qi Family poor? I suspect that relatives took in the Grandmother and perhaps the servants. If not the female servants may have become slaves and at worse been sent to government brothels. Ugh. Menglin was exiled 2,000 li away, about 666 miles. But in the very last part Lian Shu mentions that Luo Shu had managed everything so that he wouldn't have go to the frontier. Is he talking about the discovery of the missing military grain or that he didn't have to live 666 miles away. Because he would have been executed, not banished. Governor Liu was banished 3,000 li, about 1,000 miles to the West. He died after a year and Liu Wan lives in solitude. It took 2 years for Muzhi to track her down. He tells her that he is being transferred to the Capital. The next scene has the Yamen gang waiting for him to return so they can have a New Year's dinner together. Is he coming back after meeting her, that day? Did she move closer to Linfen or did he take the 40 to 60 days to make the round trip to travel the 1,000 miles to where her Father was exiled?

Muzhi carried a torch for Luo Shu that lasted until the second to the last episode. He rushed in a desperate but vain attempt to break down the door to the burning Mengke Music Hall to allow her to escape. But he had realized by ep. 32 that she had given her heart to Menglin. Menglin had met him before leaving for what he thought was cerain death in Taiyuan City so he asked Muzhi to take care of her as he was worthy of his love and loved her. Muzhi did not try to take advantage of that.

When his two fellow NIS agents rushed to him at the hospital, one looked at his face and the other didn't. Why?

What episode are you in? It's one of my favorites and my introduction to Jin Ki Joo. Not all of her dramas have the same dynamics. It is a typical cold CEO and a Cinderella secretary. There is a reason why that ML has trust issues, both with personal secretaries and with his 'Mother.' And being lied to. Lied to after baring his heart. A proud capable man who loses what made him special and is very vulnerable and dependent on someone that he fired. Episode 12 has one of my favorite scenes where she cries to the real Veronica Park. The person that she is heartbreaking jealous of is .... I re-watch for that. And the 'lap dog loyalty' that he didn't know that he needed is charming. And her love is rewarded in spades.

I think that until about half way, she tended towards Han Muzhi would have stayed with him but he failed to stand up for her when his fiance humiliated her. Menglin did stand up for her but there were a number of problems (status and personality, her insecurity about happiness and his Father) that prevented her from becoming closer to him. That was why late in the drama she still slapped him when he kissed at the Lantern Festival.

Don't know how much you've seen but the two choices, the mature ambitious Magistrate Han Muzhi and the rich blustery Menglin are shown as polar opposites. But looks are deceiving. Muzhi offers her shelter (and a job) in the Linfen Yamen from being a courtesan the Mengke Music House and gradually comes to appreciate her skills and intelligence but he is tied by his ambition and obligation and fails her when she needed it most. Menglin has a cat and dog spats and an entitled vs social stigma challenged relationship with Luo Shu. That and experience has given her a very insecure belief that all happiness is only fleeting which keeps them at arm's length for two thirds of the drama. But Menglin is willing sacrifice much including his life for her and his Family. He has hidden kindness and strengths that gradually become apparent throughout the drama. Also, much of the drama explores love and relationships between couples. It is a good watch.

That's from the wedding. Hanyan has an elder sister. Shi Yang has and maybe was able to enter the Zhuang household secretly, though.

I wonder if Zhuang Shi Yang is not Hanyan's real Father. If it came out that Yuwen was her real Father.... May explain the exile and rejection.

I would expect that the ML is behind the leaked essay and maybe the arrest is to make the FL more dependent on him. Haven't seen the trailer.
