I think that you are right, but it is kinda cheating to hide a backup like that from the storyline. We have two main contenders mentioned. Their mentors/fathers launch a great war of succession. One side is apparently wiped out. Then 19 years later, if one is knocked out and the other declines... some unknown has enough pull to be considered? I guess that it will happen like that. But I can't imagine Qingge/Ranran being allowed to be the next Empress.

Who will be the new Crown Prince is Su Yu is taken down. Does Yishui and Ranran want that life?

What I like about this drama is that there are no misunderstandings, the point is, if you watch this, you don't need to overthink, just enjoy it. Their friendship is also solid. the character I like the most is Hong Hui hahaha, I mean he's funny hey he's a really sincere person so his part is sad so he's sad too
