I think there was quiet the buildup for the connection between the 2 despite being unconventional. they wrecked each other and they are alone with only each other to know what they went through, and with redemption in sight its more i forgive you you forgive me and tenderness thing as in contrast to the feeling less night they had , another reversal like all the others , ...thats what the old school writer wanted to show as a contrast with the crazy kids in love next door.
