in further episodes we barely see Deng Wei on screen
I totally agree with you they fumbled FL's character and it's disappointing. Now she's acting more like Shuurei, but her motivations are confusing to the viewer since they forgot to characterize her that way from the start
I am behind on the releases, but I'm on episode 15, and I would recommend people watch the original anime's version of the FL putting on makeup scene. It is powerful and thought provoking. I assume they had to change things due to copyright, but seriously this is what the feminist side to this story is supposed to encompass: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myQfJBNYCKk
Just finished episode 10 - this scenario is too funny, I am really enjoying it lol. Joseph Zheng's facial expressions are perfect, I think the casting is great
The reason it has such a low rating and why people dislike it is mainly because it has some older drama tropes…
It's also based off a shoujo series from 20 years ago so it is of course going to be full of cliches lol (Which honestly all dramas are, it just depends on which ones are currently trending)
In the novel/anime she actually tutors the king, but they left that out here. She is supposed to be a super smart and driven woman who wants to help the country, which is why she is too busy with her dream of being an official to really get into romance. The king is the one who pines over her first. In this show they are picking and choosing certain aspects of her character to portray, and really doing a poor job constructing her character. Ugh.
They really made FL 10x more childish with her dub voice, it's disappointing (to me at least). But the other commenters…
And you just made me realize I was subconsciously thinking of Zhou Ye because of the VA too (I watched BFTB recently and 100% is the same VA as Yan Hui)
I'm reading the comments here and I'm surprised at all the complaining. Not every drama has to be peak in order to be an enjoyable watch. Also, many of the actors had a breakout role after this was filmed, which is why the cast seems so impressive despite this not ever supposed to be drama of the year lol.
Accoeding to native Chinese speakers LYT's line delivery is actually good but DW's isn't. I genuinely don't understand…

I've finished episode 1. It's cute and funny so far! There are some scenes directly from the anime and it's bringing back good memories since it's been a few years since I watched it. Joseph Zheng is great with his facial expressions, he is definitely an adorable Shi Ryuuki! And LTY is so gorgeous I can't take my eyes off of her <3
Just want to make some correction. Dai Luwa's character is Ran Juusan - she's in the anime, but has different…
Ohhh RW is Seiran? That makes a bit more sense. Who is Shuuei? Look how I smashed Ryuuren and Jyuusan's names together, with so many characters the anime names are hard but I will still think of them instead of the new Chinese names lol.
Watching both previews, I believe this isn't going to be like the anime at all. I think they are borrowing the unique personalities of all the male characters from the anime (which was a reverse harem trope) and the idea of smart FL having to train a dumb king (ML). But in the original anime, there was barely a love triangle, as FL only ever loved ML, even when 2ML (villain) was flirting with her, and when her bodyguard/brother figure liked her (not even happening in this show).
Well, I'm just here for the ride so I'll enjoy it anyway, but I can't figure out who DLW is supposed to be. I'm pretty sure RW is Ran Shuuei. The only other female character FL's age in the anime was Ran Jyuuren, half-sister of Ran Shuuei, and a brief love rival for the king. So DLW is almost an original character here.
I just hope they don't completely dumb down FL's character, as the best part of the anime was how humble, driven, and compassionate she was towards the people of her country (she was so busy serving the kingdom she barely had time for romance with ML! It would be great if this show could have a good balance of both). And it really looks like they are pushing the comedy hard, I just hope not to a ridiculous degree.
NO WAY FINALLY!!! I've been waiting for this drama for over 1.5 years. I was originally a fan of the anime. Now I've become a fan of Dai Lu Wa and cdramas, and I'm super excited!
