My interpretation was Heo Jun knew he was dying that's why he was happy he was able to finish his book before he did. If you watch the scene again where he was walking with the young boy, you can see he was uncomfortable. I think when he sat down, he passed away peacefully. Then his spirit saw the kite and he followed it to the place where Yeon Hee was waiting for him.
For me, I thought the ending was crappy too. After all the trouble of trying to break the curse, she ends her life in the end. But since Heo Jun's character was supposed to be based on a real person of the same name, they had to sorta make sure he lived to write the book he was supposed to have written. Then when I saw the end, I thought it was unfair that she survived and they lost all those years they could've been together. But when I thought about it again, I don't think they met again when they were older. My interpretation was, after he finished writing the book, Heo Jun knew he didn't have much time left. He was a doctor after all. And if you watch it again, you can kinda see him feeling uncomfortable while they were walking which is why they stopped. I think when he stopped, he knew he wasn't gonna last long. And when he saw the kite, and the house that looked like the house she lived in before, how he suddenly became a young man again. It was him dying and Yeon Hee was there waiting for him. Like finally, they can be together again. I would have wanted them both to live happily ever after but I guess that was too good to be true. If she hadn't died when she took the potion, then the curse wouldn't have been lifted. I think this has been a pretty good drama in my opinion.

I think this is why I haven't finished watching Dream High & Reply 1994. I was rooting for Taecyeon's character then I accidentally saw a scene from the final episode with Suzy's character going for Kim Soo Hyun. And with Reply 1994, I was rooting for Trash at first but then they introduced Chilbong and I wanted him to get the girl so hard. So when I heard that Trash won the girl, I sorta lost interest in the whole show. One of these days, I will finish both.
