I agree that modern C-dramas are lame and superficial. A lot of them are just about silly romance wrapped under title of "workplace drama" or "realistic theme". But I think there is already some changes, if you watch iQiyi "Light On Series" especially The Bad Kids and The Long Night, they involves some taboo topic such as police corruption but somehow still managed to be broadcast without significant censor that changed their storyline. They are still heavily modified though, in order to pass censorship, but it is already a surprise that such heavy themes managed to be produced and aired.

Ep 3 is actually still at the end of Vol 1 of manga, so there are still long way to go based on manga's story. But I think they won't shoot all manga's plot just the most important scenes.

Guardian is a very unique case in C-dramaland, it has all the elements destined to make it flop yet it was a huge success. It touches almost all the taboo subjects in Chinese drama as you mentioned, suffered from censorship, funding difficulties, incoherent storyline and overall cheap production value. But it turned out that the audience loved it so much (including myself) thanks to the amazing chemistry and acting skills of the two male leads. They took their roles seriously, fully understood the original relationship between their characters in the novel and portrayed it through subtle movements such as lingering eye contacts or touches. No one expected that this low-budget drama will explode to the point of catapulting the two main leads (Zhu Yilong and Bai Yu) to overnight stardom.
The Untamed is a also a very good BL-adaptation drama, but for me Guardian will always be special.

I agree! now I'm so tempted to buy the last volume in Amazon Japan so that I know how the ending goes.. I'm sure it's a happy ending, but still curious ^0^

Last volume of manga (vol 5) out today in Japan! It's gonna be a torture to wait for the weekly update of this drama T_T

Only 2 volumes out so far for the English official translation version. Vol 3 will come out next year. The series is relatively new, even in Japan the last volume (vol 5) will only come out this month in Amazon Japan.

Ossan's Love is also a light and fluffy BL with great acting, definitely one of my fave Jpn BL dramas. For Chinese one, besides CQL, you can try Guardian. It's not a very good one story/plotwise, just watch it for the amazing chemistry between the two leads ?

Kurosawa in original manga is soo endearing with all his lusty but sincere thoughts about Adachi. Some differences with drama version: when noticing the mole behind Adachi's ear, in drama Kurosawa's inner thought "the mole is so sexy... the mole!" but in manga version he boldly thought "..I wanna lick it" causing Adachi to jump and scream.. LOL ^0^
The scene where Adachi accidentally dropped the file folder and heard Kurosawa's inner thoughts is apparently added in the drama version. But it's really moving and added more sweetness to the story. Hope they can maintain this sweet atmosphere until the end :)

In manga they entered the company at the same time, so they are the same age 30 yo. And Adachi doesn't speak in honorific language to Kurosawa in drama, so they must be of similar age.

I really adore the actor playing Adachi, not only he is very cute but his acting is also very natural. I'm not a big fan of Japanese BL drama since the acting is often very awkward, so it's refreshing to see an actor who can actually act in BL drama!

The strange thing is that the rating is Douban goes up after the finale?? Guess people are happy that all characters have BE and that CYM doesn't get back with LSY.. other things are not important.. this really show how infuriated people with this drama..

I read somewhere that Zhu Yilong was also uncomfortable with Chen Yiming's personality when he first got the script, but somehow he still ended up taking the role. In reality he is a whole world different from CYM, please don't hate him.. hahaha :)
