The problem with her is that the script was changed to accommodate her story as the focus of the second half. The tone of the drama was completely off and it hurt the story as a whole.

Any actor/actress who is good looking would not make this drama work. Weren’t you just saying that many stone-faced actors/actresses only have their looks to rely on? Plus the story was written with him in mind as the ML. Also, as revolutionary as the story may seem to Chinese audiences and cdrama watchers - that are used to endless adaptations and scripts based on preexisting IP - it’s hardly unique for people who are used to films and tv shows from many other countries.
Finally, if a different actor wouldn’t make the audience feel bad for him and even disregard his mental health, I would say he didn’t do a great job after all.

The thing is that all of his characters have a little bit of himself in them. Even Xiang Liu, who would probably be the farthest one from his own personality. I would say Chen Kai Wen from Over the Sea I Come to You seems more in tune with how he is. Shen Yi and Tang Qi are too ~restrained~
