I'm sure you know that Tong Hua also "really said" that Lost You Forever was written in a period of her life where she was dealing with some injuries and was bedridden for two months after a surgery that required more resting time than she expected. But I digress. During this interview, she stated that "the heroine's choice has always been due to psychological deficiencies". The original quote in Mandarin is: "女主的选择一直都是出于心理的缺矢". This part here "出于心理的缺矢" is of vital importance because it translates to psychological shortcomings, flaws, deficiencies.
Ok, so what's my point? My point is that over the years, TH has made several remarks about how XY's trauma during her early years has informed her decisions throughout her whole life. And as much as this story has evolved during the 11 years since it was first published, its central theme has remained the same and it ain't primarily love, but loss. You were correct when you said that Cang Xuan and Xiao Yao are the leads of LYF. This is a story about their losses. The losses that these characters have suffered during the course of their lives. The first chapter of this novel begins with multiple losses, and the epilogue closes it with the biggest loss imaginable. The title itself, both in Mandarin and English, evokes a notion of longing, or yearning for something that can't ever be brought back. Make no mistake, this ain't a fairy tale with traditional notions of a happy ending.
It's the dichotomy of life and death. Of meetings and goodbyes. Her quest in life was to make sure she would never be abandoned ever again, to never be left alone, and that is what she got. That was the sum of her character and every decision she has made during the entirety of her journey has been, in one way or the other, informed by her lifelong trauma. Once again, and in Tong Hua's own words, XY's path was chosen due to her psychological deficiencies, or flaws, if you prefer.
