About the soundtrack, most of the songs are by an English rock band from the 1960s, called The Zombies. Their most famous album is Odessey and Oracle, from 1968, and they are known for having a somewhat similar style to The Beatles, though nowhere near as iconic. They were, however, great musicians in their own right.

Curiously enough, for the recording of Odessey and Oracle, they used John Lennon's Mellotron, which had been left in the studio after the Beatles' sessions for Sgt. Pepper. Both albums were recorded at the Abbey Road studios.

So for the peeps who didn’t quite grasp the use of those songs throughout the show, notice how there are many references about the sixties and even The Beatles themselves in all 8 episodes. The mom’s name is Yoko, the leader of the Gentenkai cult (the 19th Fuma Kotaro) sports a very Lennon-looking style with his long hair and round glasses. Grandma Taki also has a very late 60s/early 70s vibe, with her red hair and cool glasses. Such interesting nods for those who love this era.

So it was a very clever way to incorporate these seemingly out-of-place elements from a time period so different from what we usually associate with ninjas and Japanese mythology. Loved it! Hope there’s a second season!

I feel quite lucky to be able to say that I haven't personally met anyone with a mother like this. Granted, I'm from a different culture. But still, I hope to never encounter such a person. And I say this as someone who loves complicated characters.

One of my dear Asian friends said she has similar issues with her mom but thankfully not to the degree of awfulness shown here. It breaks my heart. I'm so sorry for everyone who has to endure a situation like this. A bond between mother and daughter is one of the most sacred things to exist, no matter where you come from.
