Master to Disciple, Disciple to Master, Typical Story but Well Executed
Xianxia is my one of my favorite genres, I have watched/dropped most of the ones available. It’s been awhile since I found a xianxia that I thoroughly enjoyed and did not have to fast forward as much. It’s hard to be creative in xianxia since it usually involves the mortals, immortals, demons vs gods; usually the bad guys are the eternal who assumes they doing the greater goods by eliminating evil sects/demon sects. I give this drama props for managing to be innovative despite all the other xianxia that came out before it.The story about master/disciple is nothing new but I have not seen the reverse where the disciple takes in his master for most of the drama, which gives rise to multiple comedic scenes. And it might just be me but I find the magic in this new/creative, for example like the restrictions from the master-disciple pact, soul control technique, spiritual soul, soul-devouring lock, etc.
The amnesic arc is also an overuse trope but I like how it was done towards the end of the show and it didn't feel out of place since it was an integral part of the story, a lot of funny scenes also happened during this arc.
I enjoyed the side characters in this drama as well and for once they don't feel like background people, especially love the bond between the other disciples, Ranran and the master, and Wei Jiu, the master of the evil sect who is not very evil. The drama also carries a meaningful message overall which is one should always look/move forward despite the regrets in the past.
40 eps might seem long but for me it was perfect since everything was well-explained, well-paced, and a very happy ending for the leads and the side couples as well.
Now to the actors, I actually find the FL the cutest as Xue Ran Ran comparing to the domineering Mu Qing Ge which I found less believable, overall her acting was decent. I did not pay much attention to Deng Wei before but his acting was surprisingly good in this, perfectly casted for this role.
This drama did not do well in China but I am happy it got a douban score of 7, well-deserved :)
