yeah it'll be my friend's first watch but for me it'll be my fourth time! it was the first cdrama i ever watched, and to this day it still remains as one of my top favourites

all the female characters in this drama have been really compelling in their own ways :~) it's really impressive work by the screenwriter

i turned a friend of mine into a WJY fan by getting them to watch this drama, so after this we're going to watch story of yanxi palace hoho ^_^

yeah i really appreciate the chinese opera elements, even if my knowledge of it is very basic! my reaction to it is more based on my technical understanding haha it doesn't ruin the experience for me, it's just that i can't ignore the annoying voice in my head that disagrees with that particular camera angle 😓

i am once again thinking about how in another universe, if the characters had met differently, XFF could've saved princess wanning 😩 obviously it would be a completely different story/genre but god do i think about how they could explore themes like gendered paths to justice, female rage, women supporting women... i can only dream it up in my head

i agree it works for some of the high-tension/emotional moments! but as someone who's worked on films before, i find it very disorienting when it breaks the spatial continuity + viewer's immersion 🙈 (e.g. when two characters are talking to each other through two shots or OTS shots, but then it suddenly switches to first person POV without establishing the gradual transition there — there's a reason directors usually avoid letting actors 'spike' the camera)

the bar is already on the ground for basic human decency but SYR somehow continues to dig deeper and go even lower

also screaming at how the literary concept of "the (gothic) double" applies to XFF + princess wanning... one chose rebirth while the other chose destruction............

the way princess wanning's backstory allowed us to gain a deeper understanding of her character was done so beautifully ugh she's really one of the most fleshed-out female antagonists i've ever come across. li meng's acting is incredible

i've grown sorta used to it but sometimes it still throws me off too 😮‍💨 the first person pov shot is such a weird directorial choice tbh it's the only thing that drives me crazy about its otherwise stunning cinematography

i had to stop myself because my lunch break is still in an hour... everyone's comments is making me excited

i'm still stuck on the first 2 minutes of today's episode omg they got me giggling to myself over here

it's his way of subtly hinting that he's aware of her real identity as xue fangfei/xue li (狸, different from the 梨 in jiang li)
