imo they're still on the same side! it's just that the emperor doesn't have a personal/emotional stake in XFF, so technically he's more objective i.e. he can readily sacrifice XFF as a pawn. we can't forget that he is first and foremost an emperor, and he will make use of every advantage in order to maintain his authority.

(XH, on the other hand, would rather avoid putting XFF in real danger. he's admitted that he can't afford to lose her ← the struggle between love and duty 🥹)

+1!!! i have my own reservations about the conclusion but i personally feel that they spent a reasonable amount of time on the whole stepmother/jiang family arc. JL's suffering started that day 10 years ago, and today XFF has finished carrying out her revenge for JL (who is the reason she even came back in the first place). now she can move on, live well, and focus on avenging herself!
