His family could have been well off, but I think that part of the movie could have been better written. We can all just assume and speculate unless you have got a better explanation.
Revisiting this after a couple of years since watching it, I can't help but think that a person like Haruto in the real Aya's life could have truly made her happy. My heart goes out to her, considering all she must have faced and went through. This was a romanticized version of her struggles, but it was a great portrayal nonetheless.
