The Abandoned is an insipid crime thriller with good cinematography wasted on poor writing and bland execution. It's fast-paced with story progression that is easy to follow as the mystery isn't complex or complicated to solve. It has a conclusive ending, neither a sad nor a happy one.
The visuals shine in this movie. The camerawork and colour-grading help create tension and build suspense when needed. Although there's no notable soundtrack, the sound effects are adequate. They help build the atmosphere, such as when Wu Jie tries breaking the door's window. The sound effects in that scene made me feel suffocated like her.
I felt nothing when the movie ended because it was difficult to connect with the characters. The acting is bland, and the characters continuously get on my nerves for making bad and irrational decisions.
