Is there any point to this Ji Heng character or is she just there to take up space and drag out the show?
Actually she plays an important role in the drama development. Since she's the sole reason why there's so many misunderstandings in DongFeng's relationship. Which is also why both of them almost lost their lives in the novel.

Yea the novel kinda ended on a slightly sad note with a happy ending. From what I've heard, the drama will be showing dj and fj together and spending time with their child.
