The overacting in JDrama/movies/anime stems from traditional Japanese theater like Kabuki and Noh theatre, where…
Oh wow I've missed an oportunity to reply again. It's been a year and I haven't realized. But I think INDEED we're watching different k-dramas. Because thriller, political, crime korean dramas released in recent years are quite far from overacting. In fact the acting is super grounded, sometimes so silent and subtle.

I'm so late for a 2016 post. But japanese dramas are bad in general. Not only dramas but films are also bad. There used to be such great Japanese movies but in the last decade only good arthouse/indie films saved Japanese industry such as Sion Sono, Shunji Iwai stuff. There are so many good and serious thriller, mystery, slice of life kdramas got released in recent years that are better than any recent American or British thriller series, such as Extracurricular, Hell is other people, Luca the beginning, Stranger, Kingdom, Vagabond, Money Game, My Mister, The school nurse files, Itaewon Class, Squid game and many more . Romcoms are still a big thing but it's not like those cringey, love dovey dramas anymore like how The heirs, boys over flowers etc. used to be.
Jdramas: feels kinda backward, lack in acting, lack artistic point of view and most of time the background musics they put, are so stupid. As an example there is a guy crying on the floor and there will be some upbeat club music in the background. Idk jdramas just seem cheap parodies to me sometimes and then I realize they're actually cheap, they have low budget compared to kdramas. And kdramas really got improved, but jdramas couldn't grab the improvement over years. I watched Alice in Borderland a few months ago and most of the actors/actresses are good looking so it's not about looks anymore, the plot is quite good, set, cinematograpgy like everything is fine but still the acting so weird. It seems like japanese actors and directors think screaming and overreacting to every single situation will capture the attention of audience which is wrong this is the main reason they're in decline overseas. This type of acting will please only 12-17 years old teenagers I think. Same goes for not all but some stupid animes. So the key word is: OVERACTING.
